Cloning from Toshiba Tecra to external SATA Hard drive

Thread needs solution

Have recently bought Toshiba Tecra laptop with a 320 G sata drive.
Usual mode of back up with previous computer (desktop with 250G drive, and previously an NEC laptop) was to clone to an external SATA 250G drive.

Using the same external drive, I have been able to clone only once from the Toshiba after many unsuccesful attempts, and never again since.

Since then, the cloning process seems to go through all the steps, but does not clone. Within seconds it says the cloning is completed. However, it has not eliminated the old data on the external drive, or transferred the new data.

We have two identical external drives, this happens from the Toshiba with both drives.

Both drives clone perfectly from the old desktop computer and the older NEC laptop.

Would someone please have a suggestion re. why this is happening?

Is there a known conflict with the Toshiba Tecra?
Is it because the external hard drive is smaller than the Toshiba drive?
Please let me know if more information is needed.
Many thanks, Carmen

Hello Carmen!

Thank you for finding time to join us and report about the issue on Forum. I understand your concern, and will do my best to help you.

There can be a lot of reasons for the issue. If the data on the drive you're cloning is larger than the free space on the target drive, then the clone may fail. If the spaced used on the source drive is smaller than the free space on the target HDD, then the issue requires investigation.

But before we proceed with gathering data, I'd like to offer you a workaround: Backup and Restore the drive
- Backup the drive (Main Screen - > Disk and Partition backup)
After the backup is created, please
- Create a bootable CD with the Acronis product (download an ISO and burn it onto the CD)
- go to the Main Screen, find the backup created and select “ Recover”.
This will start the restoration process.
When it’s finished, unplug the source drive and boot from the restored one.
I’d advise you to take a look at the User’s Guide’s chapters 3 and 4 (Backing up data and Recovering data). They contain the detailed information about the process).

If you would like to proceed with cloning, please provide us with the following diagnostic data:

  1. Acronis Info from the problem machine
  2. Acronis Report from the drives
  3. Exact sequence of steps performed
