Cloning trouble

Thread needs solution

I am trying to clone one of my hard drives to a newer one. I have booted Acronis from the dvd, but when I try to clone, it gives me an error. When looking in the log, the only error I see is "MFT bitmap corrupted." How do I fix this error?

This message means that the Master File Table has corruption. There are 2 copies of the MFT one at the beginning of the disk and a copy at the end of the disk. These 2 files in your case differ thus the corruption.

It is likely that your disk has 1 or more bad sectors you can attempt to repair this using the chkdsk utility run from an administrator command prompt using the /f and /r switches. You should first run the chkdsk command without switches to locate the problem areas on each disk partition. Hidden partitions should be checked as well and you will need to temporarily assign a drive letter to each such partition using Windows Disk Management removing them once finished with chkdsk.

Be advised that using chkdsk to repair the disk can result in data loss therefore I recommend you perform a sector by sector backup of the drive prior to any repair attempt to keep such loss to a minimum.
