Cloning Windows 8 and UEFI

Thread needs solution

Hi guys,

I have an HP Envy 4-1130us with a 500GB HDD that I'm trying to swap to a 512GB SSD. What's the best way to do this? I tried acronis TIH 2013, however, when I tried to clone the drive I got a "warning after operation completion operating system will not boot from the destination disk in the bios" message.

Will the SSD still be bootable after cloning, or is there anything special that needs to be done to get the clone to boot?

Thanks!

Make sure you start the cloning from the recovery CD not from within Windows.

If this is a laptop, I would try reverse cloning - that is putting the 500GB drive into an external caddy and the new SSD into the laptop and clone from there.

So long as the old drive is not attached when you try to reboot everything should work. Make sure that your recovery CD contains the UEFI booting patch found here, after applying the patch you will need to make a new CD.

Personally I would opt for making a complete disk image and restoring to the new drive, but of course you need a 3rd drive to do that for this particular manouvre.
