Combining Nonstop Backup with File Backup

Thread needs solution

Hello. I'm just starting to use Acronis True Image Home 2011 for the first time and I have a couple of questions. I'd appreciate some advice.

1) I have a folder with about 400MB of small files that is added to frequently. I was wondering if I can back this folder up with both Nonstop Backup and scheduled File Backup. The reason is that I like the convenience of Nonstop Backup, but it doesn't offer validation. And since the files I'm backing up are important to me, I'd like to supplement it with a weekly validated File Backup. Can I do this? Will the two backups not interfere with each other? Do they use a separate mechanism to discover which files have been added/changed?

2) With Nonstop Backup, what happens if I restart my computer while a backup is running? I know the backups are incremental and very quick, and it's unlikely that this would happen, but what if it does? What if I hit the Restart button just as a backup copy is being written to disk? Is the software ready for this? I wouldn't want to have the backup corrupted.

I'm running Acronis True Image Home 2011, Update 2 (build 6868) on Windows XP Home Edition SP3.

1) Yes you can combine these. If you use the NSB in file mode, it behaves like a file backup to detect changes. If you use different backups for added safety, consider using different destination media (diversification of risks and redundancy is important for irreplaceable content).

2) Any interruption of power always represent a risk for I/O events. Microsoft drivers and OS do their best to mitigate them. Pressing the restart button will avoid many more issues than pulling the plug from the wall...
But there is no guarantee and no foolproof absolute protection against this (it is true for any application). This is why:
- you need to run partial backups in a way that your last full backup is never too old for you to go back to,
- alway make sure your last full backup gets validated (you just need a validation at any time during the chain)
- diversify your backups.

Thanks Pat. So just to clarify the first question: If I create a new file, it gets backed up by Nonstop Backup at the next 5 minute interval. Then when the weekly File Backup runs later, that file that I created gets backed up again, even though it was already backed up by Nonstop Backup earlier. Do I understand it correctly?

Yes, each task is a separate backup task. A file will be backed up again in any backup task that includes it.
