Computer shuts off during backup

Thread needs solution

Acronis was working fine but now my computer shuts down a few minutes after I start initial backup of my hard drive.
I tried to use a different destination hard disk and the same thing happened.
I use Acronis True Image Home version 11.0
I thought that ATI catalyst was causing problems with my backup so I have uninstalled it but my computer still shuts off during the backup.
I use Windows XP as operating system.
Please provide suggestions what could cause the problem and what should I try.
Regards to all,
John

Thanks Bob for the link. My problem is different to the one described in that post. My computer doesn't go to sleep, it shuts down by itself during unfinished backup.
I have all settings for my computer in Windows set to No sleep, No hibernate, Computer Always ON.
Any other suggestions?
Please help - I need to back up my computer ASAP.

Does it shut down normally (Windows closes all programs and logs off) or just powers off instantly? Does it work if you run backup from bootable media (if you need to get backup done, try it first)? Can you suspect defective RAM or CPU overheating?

Thanks dev-anon.
My computer powers off instantly, without any warnings or log off.
What do you mean "run back up from bootable media"???
I don't suspect defective RAM or CPU but sometimes a warning pops up saying that my CPU is overheating which is not true, I checked it already and it is faulse warning. Do you think that this could be a problem?
Any other suggestions?
Thanks in advance for helping.

Yes, the alarm that the CPU is overheating is most probably the reason why your computer shuts down. How did you check it was not true? The CPU can report different temperatures within the CPU and sometimes some third party software don't report a CPU temperature at all but call it CPU. So your overheating component can be some other chip.
Make sure you use software that is provided by your CPU or motherboard manufacturer and compare with your BIOS temperature reports.

HI John

first: exuse my english!

To the topic:
I had the same problem today, though it never occured before. Tried several times to backup, same results as you - sudden power off. But Pat is right, seems a CPU-overheating. My solution: I've a vario-speed-fan on the CPU, wich I can manually rise. Exactly thats what I did. With full power on the fan I was able to create the backup. Looks like the backup-process takes a lot of CPU-usage, so it run on highpower during the performance.

Hope it helped a bit, maybe someone else will stumble upon it.
