Confessions of long time user. The way I use Acronis

Thread needs solution

Here is the truth. I NEVER leave Acronis True Image on my operating systems disk. I ALWAYS make my backups by booting from either a USB Stick or from a CD. Either one works fine. I ALWAYS make a total backup of a hard drive. I NEVER do incremental backups.

How do I get away with NOT having Acronis installed on my computer. I install it on my experimental PC sitting off to the side. But before I do that I use a previous version of Acronis to back it up to another hard disk. I install and validate my newly purchased version of Acronis, then I immediately make my boot media. After that, I use the boot media to return that PC to its running condition without Acronis installed on it.

WHY? I don't trust any software to make a backup of my operating system while my operating system is running. That is an invitation to trouble. I want my image backup to be of a system that is not currently running. I know people who have suffered using installed Acronis.

ACRONIS works well the way I use it. I have tried some of the features offered in using the installed version and frankly I have not had good experiences. As long as I can purchase the software, make my boot media and use it the way I do, I'll be happy.

The reason I bought Acronis TIB to start with is because Norton Ghost got bought out and bloated and had to be installed on the hd to run. I used it with boot media a long time ago to "GHOST" images. Worked great but they ruined it.

I hope Acronis realizes that not everybody wants Acronis to be running all the time on their PC and making backups to the cloud and such. I surely don't.

If Acronis ever takes the direction that Norton Ghost did, then I will switch to a different product.

Thanks for the good work, but don't ruin it.

FortyNiner,
You are not alone in working only from the Recoery CD. Others have reported the same.

You do not indicate which version of Windows nor TI but since you posted in the 2014 forum,
I am assuming that is the version you are now using.

One point of clarification or I may be misunderstanding.
You do not need TI installed in order to create the Recovery CD.
The Recovery CD can be built via a download of the ISO bootable media file from your own Acronis account.
My signature link #9 below shows this in picture 7.

If you chose to purchase/upgrade to 2015, all you need to do is to register your 2015 serial number and then download the 2015 ISO file from you account.

Once you have the iso file on your computer, burning it to CD is as simple as
If using Win 7, by right clicking on the iso file and choosing the "open with Windows Disk Image Burner:.
If using XP, by right clickin on the iso file and choosing a 3rd party program such as the free ImgBurn.

The only real need to have TI installed is if you want to mount the backup for viewing its contents.

The backup procedure using the CD also provides for Incremental or differential type backups.

The simpler ways usually has so many fewer problems. Congratulations on your success.

GroverH,

I have bought and used versions 10,11, 12,13, and 14. Presently using 14. Haven't bought 15 yet.

I, probably like many people, consider myself a computer hobbyist. I have a main PC and a piddling PC. I experiment and try various OS's on it. I have used Acronis to backup and restore Windows XP, Windows Vista, Windows 7, Windows 8.1, Windows Technical Preview (Windows 10) and Linux on my test machine. I have backed up hard disks and ssd drives to local hard disks, external hard disks, and network connected computer using Acronis. I have limited success using Acronis Clone drive utility. Often the clone drive won't boot. But if I back up to another disk, then restore to the disk I want to use, the disk will boot.

I use and like Acronis. Just wanted to share what works for me. Thanks for the information regarding downloading the ISO instead of creating my own ISO. Good idea.

I am not an advocate of cloning but it does mostly work when the target is placed inside the computer,
and the source placed elsewhere, and clone when using your Recovey CD.

Thanks for the followup.

To avoid version confusion, best to use the year in the name, like the 2015 version or the 2014 version.
Some of the older versions had both 10, 11 and and then a later newer 2010 version and 2011 versions
