CONFIRMING THE RECOVERY PROCESS

I’d like to confirm I understand the recovery process right if my computer fails and I obtain a new computer.

I boot up on the new computer using the universal restore that I have on a flashdrive.

I recover from the backup I made on an external hardrive.

My new computer will have all the software and programs that were installed on my old computer. No reinstallation of the programs will be necessary.

Your description of the recovery process is not quite correct for the scenario you are describing.

In the event of a total failure and replacement with a new computer the process would be:

  1. Assuming that your new computer comes pre-installed with a new Windows OS - make a full OS backup of this Windows OS & all required partitions or be prepared to remove the original boot drive from the new computer and put it safely aside and install a spare drive to restore to.
  2. Confirm that both your old computer and your new computer boot in the same mode, i.e. that both use the UEFI / Secure boot bootloader, or both use Legacy / BIOS/MBR boot method.  Confirm also how your internal OS disk drive is connected, i.e. SATA, AHCI, RAID.  Confirm how your drive is partitioned / formatted, i.e. MBR, GPT.
  3. Assuming that you are matching with like for like per the checks above.  Boot from the Acronis Rescue Media (not Universal Restore media) and restore your backup image of your old computer OS drive and required system partitions (System Reserved / EFI partition).
  4. Next, boot from your Acronis Universal Restore media and allow this to prepare your restored OS to work with the different hardware of the new computer.  Note: you may still need to provide additional device drivers needed by the new hardware to successfully boot.
  5. Assuming that you can boot successfully into your old Windows OS on the new computer, you may still face Windows Activation issues depending on which version of Windows you are using.  If your old computer has an OEM version of Windows then such licenses are not transferable to another computer.  If both computers have been activated for Windows 10 with the same edition (Home or Pro) then activation should work fine with the change of hardware.
