Consolidation Fails After Manual Deletions

Thread needs solution

I commonly have this problem. My backups have cleanup turned on, but my settings for the number of fulls + incrementals might run out of space. So I manually delete some old files to clear out space. At that point Acronis will create a backup but fail in consolidation since files it expected to delete are gone. To get past those errors what I've done in the past is to start a whole new fresh full backup, not specifying any cleanup, then go in and change it to a having incrementals with cleanup. There's got to be a better way to do this, isn't there? Is there a way to get the existing cleanup process to ignore files it thinks it needs to removed when they're not there? It's really a pain specifying a whole new full, then adjusting it to full with incrementals, just to get past these errors.

Joel, if you delete any backup files manually outside of ATI, then you need to perform a validation for the backup task that created those files.  This is needed to reconcile the information stored in the Acronis metadata database with the status of remaining files.

Validation will throw an error for each missing / deleted backup file that you should take the Ignore option for.

Just to clarify, automatic cleanup only runs after a new backup version chain has been started with the creation of a new Full backup file, so any settings you have how how many version chains to keep etc need to include space for the next new full backup too.

Steve: I ran a validation and it complained when it couldn't find a file, but it didn't give me an option to ignore that file. In this case it's Acronis 2014, so maybe that version didn't have the option, but my only choices were Retry, Browse or Cancel". What can be done then? - Joel

Joel, the Cancel option should give the same result as Ignore in later versions - it's been a while since I have used the 2014 version.

Maybe it did, but it seemed like the Cancel just cancelled the whole validation process.

Joel, have you checked the logs for the results of the validation action?  There should be a log for this which may give more information.
