Daily and Weekly Backups..user opinions wanted

Thread needs solution

Using ATI 2011.

I'm trying to figure this out, but I'm hoping one of the end users already has. I have a daily backup of my C: that occurs at 4pm everyday. If the computer is off, the task starts when it's turned on.

I have this backup scheduled as a weekly backup, set to run on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, and Saturday.

On Sunday, I have a task that runs at 7am. If the computer is off, the task starts when it's turned on. This is a task to backup to an external USB drive.

I had to leave the computer off for a few days. The daily task proceeded to make backups for every day the computer was off. A waste of time as obviously if the computer was off, there were no data changes meaning there is nothing to backup.

How can I schedule a weekly backup plan that does what I want (daily backups and 1 weekly external) without having these redundant backups whenever I have the PC off for a few days?

When you set up the task, you can mark whether you want it to run missed tasks. You have to go the the Schedule window like you're going to edit or set the scedule parameters then click on Advanced Options on that page to get to the check box.

It's very simple. Use the Windows Task Scheduler instead of scheduling the backup jobs using ATI. WTS permits you to specify for each task "Wake the computer to run this task". If this box is not checked, the computer will run the job if the computer is on, and will stay off and not run the job if the computer is off.

Experienced users know that you should not attempt to use ATI for anything other than disk imaging, i.e. stay away from secure zones, job scheduler, auto-delete of image files, encrypted backups, and so on. The batch files I have posted provide fine-grained control of any number of backup generations and their execution is managed by WTS.

The windows scheduler won't turn on cmputerl it can only wake a system from standby, not form off.

The ati Schedeuler in the last two versions can do the same thing. IT seems that Arthur's issue isn't having backups when onothing's happening but getting backups after nothing has happened. For that, the technique of choice would be to tell ATI not to run misseed tasks at startup.

You're right, of course. My mistake.

I'd forgotten that my main computer turns itself on in the morning using the BIOS autostart facility, and then sleeps at any point during the day after 15 minutes of inactivity. Depending on the day of the week, the Windows Task Scheduler runs either the weekly or daily backup batch file at midnight, in both of which the last step is to turn the computer off. I've measured the computer's power consumption in standby mode and it's less than 20 watts, so I'm happy to have it sleep during the day when it's not being used.
