Damaged computer

Thread needs solution

My original computer was physically damaged and I've purchased a new one. Is it possible to transfer my hard drive from the orginal computer to the new one? If so, generally how does one go about it?

It is possible to transfer the HDD, however, the OS may not boot due to different hardware (that is, the installation does not have the correct drivers for the chipset and other on-board devices). If you are using Windows, assuming you get the system to boot, you will have to reactivate the OS and if you have it, Microsoft Office may also require reactivation. The driver issue can be overcome using the migrate OS option (you need to have divers handy for the new computer). [My recollection is that this is only available with the premium version of ATI 2014.] The process for doing this is described in the ATI user manual.

You will be probably better off with a new installation of the OS (a lot of junk tends to build up on system drive). You can then copy any data on the old HDD to the new HDD (best way to do this is by using a UBB HDD cradle).

I always keep my data of separate HDD to my OS. Make OS re-installation less troublesome.
