Data backup tib file won't mount

Thread needs solution

I have a Dell PC running Win 7 Home Premium 32 bit. I have Acronis 2010 installed for approx 1 year. I remember mounting a tib file and exploring my data files but it has many months ago. Anyway, recently, I found that I was missing a spreadsheet file. I figured that it was no problem because I could find it in one of my Acronis backups. I connected my external hard drive and opened Acronis. Then, I selected the Mount Image option under the Tools & Utilities. I immediately received and error message that said, "Error while opening the archive file. The archive format is not supported by this operation."

Disappointed, confused and feeling rejected, I closed out of the Acronis program and was ready to dismount the external drive. Instead, I went to the Windows Explorer and navigated to the external drive, and then to one of my tib files. Double clicking it, I was amazed that it opened and revealed all of my backed up files. I double clicked the spreadsheet file I needed and it opened! I was able to save it to my computer.

But, this raises some troubling questions:
1. What will happen when I try to restore all of the files?
2. What about my backup of the c:/ drive (operating system)? Will that work?

I am concerned and shaken to the point that I don't trust all the backups I have been making with Acronis. What is the cause of this?

Looks like it is a file backup. Only image backups can be mounted, but both types can be explored in explorer. Does it validate correctly?
