Defrag?

Thread needs solution

I was in the process of defragmenting my main HDD when I noticed that the defrag program indicated my back up HDD was 99% fragmented. I have that drive deselected for defrag but it made me wonder if defragmenting my Acronis backup files would harm the backup files. Or would it make restores any faster? Would it corrupt the backup files? Any idea?

I personally do not defragment my drives that contain backup images. It is possible that a power failure or other problem could cause data corruption during the defragmentation process.

There is no reasonable gain from defragmenting the drive that contains the backup files. On the contrary, there are reasonable risks that the operation could corrupt your backup files. Although most defrag tools end up using the Windows API to defrag, we have seen archives getting corrupt after a simple file copy.
