Deleting Backups

Thread needs solution

I have a chain of eight TIB 2014 full and differential backups. I want to keep only the last full (#7) and last differential (#8). Is it safe to delete the older #6 thru #1 as long as delete them starting with #5?

Mark, providing that you are totally sure that you are deleting only your unwanted .TIB backup files, then you can do so using Windows Explorer but you should then perform a Validation for the backup task that created those files in order to reconcile the Acronis database records with the remaining files in your backup location.

The recommended method of removing unwanted backup files is to use the automatic cleanup options in the task settings, so that Acronis does the deleting of files and manages the database records at the same time.

Steve,

I will first move the unwanted backups and then validate. I assume if the validation fails, then I can move them back and re-validate.

Thank you very much!

Mark, when you do the validation, Acronis will present popup messages about the missing (moved, deleted) files - you should take the option to Ignore each of these.

An alternative approach would be to take the clone settings option for your backup task, then modify the cloned task to point to a new backup folder to start a new backup version chain there.  Before running the new cloned task, remove the settings for the original task, at which point you can remove any of the backup files created by that removed task without needing to validate.  The new cloned task can then be renamed as needed - it defaults to having the old name prefixed by (1) - the name is used for the backups created by the task.
