By design? RECOVER larger disk to smaller SSD, gets Destination disk greyed out
I tried to Recover a ATIH2015 image to a 256Gb SSD disk but was unabled to select Destination disk (SSD) as it was greyed out. This is what I have:
Software: USB Bootable ATIH 2015 Build 6525
Source Image: on External USB Disk, Imaged by ATIH2015, Disk Size 256Gb SSD, Used Space 65Gb, Dell XPS 13 Win8.1 Pro image.
Destination Disk: 128Gb Samsung 840 Pro
Result:
FAILED: Destination Disk greyed out.
I then tried with another image which was imaged from 128Gb SSD disk (I have 3x XPS 13, two with 128Gb and another with 256Gb SSD) i.e.
Source Image: on External USB Disk, Imaged by ATIH2015, Disk Size 128Gb SSD, Used Space 65Gb, Dell XPS 13 Win8.1 Pro image.
Result:
SUCCESS: Recovery was successful. System boot fine.
Both Recovery were done with the destination SSD disk in the ultrabook, not on the external USB disk i.e. destination disk is in Dell XPS 13. And this XPS is not the same system as the one I made the images from.
My question is - is this by design in ATIH 2015? My recollection is that this should not be the case, Recovery is supposed to resize to fit the destination disk as long as the Used Space is within the size of destination disk's size.
The BIOS is set for Legacy boot. The images were done by changing the BIOS to Legacy.

Thanks for the prompt comment Pat L.
No, I didnt do sector-by-sector backup (never needed to do). The source disk size is 256Gb, still has plenty of room as only 65Gb were occupied in the C:OS partition.
Actually, I recovered only the C: OS partition from source image (imaged from 128Gb disk) and has successfully boot to working system from this Recovery i.e. ignored the WinTools and ESP partitions. However, if I select the image from 256Gb disk image then the destination disk is greyed out (even if I selected all partitions). Didn't get to the stage where I can resize the destination partition.
I will try to recovery (from 256Gb disk image) using combination you suggested when I get back from hiking tomorrow and post the update. Not very hopeful though, I rarely encountered problem with ATIH until version 2015.
Yes, I restore from USB Bootable ATIH2015 memory stick.
ps:
I may give ATIH2011 a try if I can find the memory stick, not sure if the image is downward compatible though.
I attached the photo of the source disk partition structure, as you can see the C: is hardly filled up.
The second attachment has weird Destination disk structure i.e. look at the Partition Size, it is 0 size. I somehow managed to select Disk 3 eventhough it was Greyed Out on this try. Something is not right with the software, could be bug in this routine. I could not reproduced this.
