Difference between Acronis Home and server edition

Thread needs solution

I am a home customer. I have 2 PC's. One with Windows Xp and one with Windows 7.
I also have a Microsoft windows Home server (based on server 2003).
Acronis for windows server is very expensive for me. I am not a company with lots of money.
So spending 850 US dollars is not an option.
Can i use Acronis True Image Home 2011 on a windows homeserver ?
I suspect True Image Home is not intended to use with a Windows Home Server ?

Hello Rob!

Welcome to our Forum, we're glad to greet you here!  I understand your concern, and will be glad to shed the light to the situation.

I regret to inform you that Acronis True Image Home supports only Workstation OS, and Home Server is based on the Server OS. Thus it will not support Home Server.

Should you need anything else or have any further questions - feel free to contact us at your earliest convenience, we will be happy to help you!

Thank you!

Imaging a WHS can be tricky. I've done it before by imaging all the drives and then restoring all the drives. I assume you know that you can't just image the "Windows" drive and have that be a usable backup. If you have a lot of data, the backup will be very large. I deleteted mostly everything when I did mine to keep it small.

I wouldn't recommend imaging a WHS live (I wouldn't install TI onto it). It's best to boot to the CD and do it.

Hmm. That;s just what I thought.
Just make a backup of the "windows'and not the data.
I indeed have a lot of data on WHS. I'm now transferring the data to a NAS whith RAID 1.
In your last line you say"It's best to boot to the CD and do it".
I suppose you mean the True Image boot cd, and make a backup after it has booted ?

Boot to the TI CD and create a backup of every drive (it needs to be an Entire Disk Image backup). Save the backup to a USB drive or network share (a internal drive or eSATA would be much faster). When restoring, each drive must be restored so that everything matches up correctly (you can't just restore one drive or partition and have it work).

In addition, if you plan to rely on this method, you may want to do a test restore and make sure it works. I generally do this type of testing during the setup phase so I know if it's going to work or not before I count on it.

Personally, since reinstalling a normal WHS isn't that difficult, it's usually much easier to just back up the data on the server. The data can be copied back after a reinstall.

Hello all,

Thank you for your posts and your kind help Mudcrab.

Rob, I will do my best to assist you.

I just wanted to follow-up regarding Acronis products support for Windows Home Server. We recently released a KB article about this, you can take a look at it here.

Just in case, if the backups from the bootable CD will complete successfully but restoration fails, we will not be able to investigate this issue because we do not support Windows Home Server.

Please let me know if you have additional questions.

Thank you.
