Disc/sector read error freezes PC

Thread needs solution

Have a new issue...when trying to do a full backup ( dozens succesfully done previously) I am getting the attached error. My PC freezes and I have to do a forced restart via the PC's restart button.

What is this error and how do I get around it ?

Thanks...TRinAZ

Did you run a chkdsk /r command on each partition that you are backing up?

Assumine when ATI operates it reads and writes to your disk some, and doens't immediately throw up the error, then it's probably a disk read/write error and chedsk will reveal it and, at least temporarily fix it. If it is a disk error and the problem returns later, then you probably need to replace your hdrive. One of themost common symtoms of a hdrive gong bad is bad sectors start popping up.

If not a hdisk problem, then it could be a bad spot in memory is preventing ATI from getting reliable disk reads at certain places in memory. To check that, run "memtest86+" (a free program) over night to see if any memory errors show up.

Have run both chkdsk /f & chkdsk /r

Both report no eoors...chkdsk /f went thru 3 passes/stages...chkdsl /r went thru 5

Here's the chkdsk /r log from Events Viewer:

Doesn't appear to be a disk error....Will check out memtest86 tonight....

We have seen several cases where chdsk doesn't find anything, but a manufacturer's diag utility does find something.

Another possibility is a problem with the ATI drivers. That could be solved by uninstalling, rebooting, reinstalling. You can export your backup settings before uninstalling.

If the problem is always happening at the same backup progress point or sector, I'd lean towards a disk issue.

OK...one other issue that may or may not be related.

Have discovered that there are numerous Seagate Disk Wizard entries in my Registry. I did have Seagate installed prior to ATIH 2011...but I believe upon install ATIH detected it and removed it ?

Anyway...attached two jpgs show Seagate Disk Wizard definitely not removed completely...onless (doubtful) ATIH 2011 installs/inserts these entries into the registry as part of ATIH 2011 install procedure ?

Again tho...ATIH has been working fairly flawlessly since installation ?

Thanks...

A conflict between low level drivers is possible. What triggered it recently versus when you installed it, unsure...

Does your disk error always happen at the same time/progress level?
