Dual Boot: C,D - Create Images Re:What about small System Volume?

Thread needs solution

In the past when I image C I always include the small several hundred MB System Volume. However when i image D I have never included it. Should I be including the System Volume when I image D or am I doing it correctly now. TIA.

dan,
Should you have a need to create a replacement disk (if disk fails, etc), then your bacup should included all partitions on the disk. Having all partitions included makes the restore easier with hassle and fewer changes for a mistake of failure.

Look at link #2 below especially the first few pictures. The "disk mode" backup is my recommendation for a backup to contain everything you need for a restore to a new disk or even a single partition restore--should you want to just overlay the existing content with a prior content.

ATT: GroverH = Thanks for all that knowledge. It will take a while for me to go through all of it however in the meantime I thought I would ask: I already use a second hard drive that I image completely so that if the notebooks hard drive ever goes bad I can just pop in the back up hard drive. My question about back ups was more about what happens if I nuke one of my partitions either C or D. If C goes bad I can image just that back and that image contains both C and the System Volume. However if D goes bad and I need to image that back I have never included the small system volume with that image and I am wondering if that is a mistake. Should my image of D also contain the system volume or is it enough just to include the system volume with my C image. Or should I NOT include the system volume with any of my C or D images? TIA.

My prior posting answers your questions. I am suggesting that you change your type backup toa "disk mode" backup so the single backup contains all you need and more.

Yes, you can restore your C from your current backup. Yes, you can restore the other hidden partition, if needed.

If D needs to be restored, you can do the restore and if you need the hidden partiton, it could be restored aftewards from the C partiton backup.

But, having it all in one backup helps to make sure you have all the settings plus there is no downside the having all in one backup. You can choose whether to restore it all or just restore single or multiple partitions.
