Encryption compatibility

Thread needs solution

I use TIH 2014 Premium to back up multiple computers to NAS. I am required by HIPAA to use encryption on the computers in addition to the NAS. Is there a current recommendation for computer encryption that is workable with TIH's encryption on the NAS?

If you have to use whole disk encryption, you can backup from Windows (the image data will be decrypted) and you can store the backup as an encrypted backup archive. When you restore, your disk will decrypted and you might have to repair the startup of the computer, but it should work.

If you can use EFS encryption, you can do regular file or disk & partition backups. Make sure you backup your EFS encryption key as you will need it in case you reinstall Windows one day.

Sorry for the delayed response. By "repair the startup", are you referring to that on the Windows DVD or something more specific?

It depends. On Windows 8, the computer can repair itself pretty easily. On all versions of Windows, you'd otherwise use the Windows installatio DVD to repair the startup. Either automatically, or manually through Bootrec commands and stuff

Okay, thanks. I'm using W7Pro, so I'll probably try the automatic method but research the Bootrec commands beforehand.

Remember that Bootrec works for MBR disks. In Windows 8, most if not all OEM computers ship in UEFI/GPT configurations. I am not sure how the recovery behaves in this case. I never tried.
To be safe, consider using EFS with the Pro/Enterprise version of Windows 8 or 7 for selected files and folders.
