Excluding index.dat files
Hi,
I would like to make a backup of my c:\ partition so that all index.dat files are excluded. On the exclude page I removed all the current excludes and added index.dat. When I inspect the resultant image file I get conflicting results. If I double click the image file and navigate around I cannot see any index.dat files. If I mount the image instead and navigate around the image I find that some index.dat are present.
Why is there a difference in the two results? Which one is correct? Why are some of the index.dat files still present in the mounted image? What is the correct procedure to exclude index.dat files from the backup image?
On another matter is it possible to create a backup image without using hot backup technology, in other words can a backup image be taken where the machine is rebooted using a DOS console application where it has exclusive access to the partition that is being backed up.

Thanks for the reply on the hot image question.
I have since looked around the forum and it seems as though there is a history of problems with the exclude feature.
Does the exclude file (not directory) feature actually work? My particular requirement is to exclude index.dat files from the backup image. There are a number of such files, some are OS files, some are hidden and I would like them all excluded - no restrictions.
The manual says that this is possible so now I need to know for sure if it actually works or not. If this is possible what is the correct way to specify the filter? I have aready tried index.dat without using any paths which results in some (but not all) index.dat files being excluded.
I have the latest version of ATI home 2010 on a Windows XP Pro SP3 PC.
