External hard drive not recognized

Thread needs solution

I'm running Windows 8.1 and True Image 2014. Backed up data to external hard drive, which is able to be see when running windows. However, when booting the Acronis boot disk to try to restore data (recovery manager) the external drive does not show up. Suggestions??

Make sure you boot on the recovery CD AFTER you have connected the USB disk. No plug and play here...

If it persists, probably a problem of driver support. Try another USB port to see if that makes any difference.

If still there, you will have to purchase the premium edition to be able to create a WinPE-based recovery CD (or better, a MustangPE-based recovery environment)>

I had the opposite experience.

I am testing recovery for the first time from a WD My Passport device.

I plugged it in after booting from the recovery USB, and I was able to browse to the TIB files.

However, that's as far as it went. When I selected a TIB backup file and clicked 'Open', no files were displayed. (All works well in Windows)

As was Bob's experience, the next times I booted to the recovery USB with the My Passport already plugged in, it was not detected at all.

Big Hank 99,

Try attaching several different methods such as either before or after booting and even a different usb cable.

During the recovery operation, from inside the TI program. Browse to the backup file and click clck the option to "Add to backup list".
