Failed to create snapshot for backup.

Thread needs solution

The backup continues and reports a successful completion but always give this message. Anybody got any idea why and should I be worried?

Try to:
- export your backup settings,
- uninstall 2012,
- reboot,
- reinstall 2012,
- import your backup settings.

Hello Roy, and Pat,

Roy, welcome to our Forum, it's good to have you with us.

Pat, thank you for your help.

Roy, this error might point onto different causes, and might also be safely ignored in several cases. Still it requires investigation.

If Pat's solution didn't help, or you would like avoid re-installation of the product, please share with us the following information:

  1. Acronis System Report
  2. Do you backup files or entire system?
  3. Where the backup is located?

I would also appreciate if you could validate the backup to make sure that the backups are fine, and your data is safe.

Should you need anything else or have any further questions - feel free to contact us at your earliest convenience, we will be happy to help you!

Thank you.

I received this message every time I run the backup.
I have already uninstall re install and re create the backup job from start.
I have removed all the log and backup start with full backup DATA_BACKUP2013-08-2226_full_b1_s1_v1
Backup are set as file and not partitions, backup is stored in diffrent partions. I have run validation and operation was scucceful.
Any suggestion what is the cause of failer?

Thanks in Advance..

I have the same problem with TrueImage 2013 when performing a file backup on a Windows 7 machine. Nothing in the logs indicates the cause of the problem (actually, there is very little information in the logs!).

Was a solution to this problem ever found (other than a reinstall - which did not work)?

If a snapshot cannot be created, I suspect there is a problem getting either Windows or NTFS to create a snapshot. After several attempts, TrueImage either ignores the error or a snapshot is finally created, and the backup completes successfully (again, cannot tell from the miserly information in the log).

Is it possible to log more information about this problem when performing the backup?

Thanks.

As a suggestion you should have a look at Windows task manager and make sure that snapman.sys is set to run automatically. Another possibility would be to run sfc /scannow from an admin command prompt so that Windows file checker can find and attempt to fix any system files that may be corrupted.

We have the same problem with True Image 2016; Failed to create snapshot for backup reported for every backup. The backups are validated as fine. I believe this occurs when backing up files from a network location.

Hello SEI,

Yes, you are right, backups of network shares are always created without snapshot, which means that files in use will not be backed up. I would also try disabling the volume shadow copy service as described in the following article: https://kb.acronis.com/content/48686

Thank you,

Thank you, Ekaterina!

So, this is normal with backig up (files and folders from) network shares, and just means that files in use will not be backed up in this particular run? I am fine with this....

The root cause of the error is two fold.  First a snapshot can only be created on an NTFS volume as VSS (the snapshot service) is a part of the NTFS file system.  Second, this snapshot will not be created on network shares as Ekaterina points out.  An exception would be if the network share where on a server system disk with an NTFS file system in use to support the snapshot on that volume.

Thank you Enchantech, for the summary of the root cause.

I too am seeing this message in my backup, and like Dragi Raos, am fine with knowing this.

That said... are there plans to indicate IF a file has indeed, not been backed up?

Absent that, is there a tool that can be ran to verify the completeness of the backup?

Without this knowledge, I am not fine with the situation, as very important files might be continuously open on a workstation, and therefore, never backed up.

I look forward to the clarification.

Best Regards,
