Failed to read from sector error
I have True Image 2009, recently I've been getting a 'failed to read from sector xxxxxxxx from disk 1' error. I have a single C: drive and an external USB that it backs up to. Does this error refer to the C: drive or represent a failure of the C: drive? Can it be fixed with CHKDSK?
Any help appreciated.
Mark.

Mark
I experienced a similar error earlier this year. Nothing would fix it so I gave up, however a few days later it resolved itself somehow.
The error was reported in only a few seconds, much to quickly for a scan to have found it. I'm guessing it was listed somewhere and that list was checked before a backup even started to write to the hard drive.

Thanks for the reply (sorry I didn't get back sooner, email notification isn't working for me!).
I wasn't sure which disk it was referring to ('disk 1' doesn't really help). I've run a full chkdsk on the backup drive and it found a few errors but it didn't fix it. I'll run the same on my local drive shcduled for the nex reboot.
This is the message I get after I cancel the dialog:

OK, problem solved. Running a full chkdsk on the local drive has fixed it, I am no longer getting the 'cannot read from sector' error. Thanks to all who replied.

I also found chkdsk to solve this problem

ATI is good at turning up disk errors that you didn't even realize that you had. It's also good at finding bad RAM. Although it has its share of problems, it's not always at fault.

lol. Yes, very true. It's a bit like saying a blind soldier is good at finding land mines.
If chkdsk fixes a read error, there's a good chance you have a bad sector and often when bad sectors start showing up, they do so with increasing frequency until the disk becomes useless -- so it's something to keep an eye on.

I have just purchased ATI Home 2010 - I have not managed to perform a single backup yet. After locking partition C: I get read sector errors and failed backup.
I have run chkdsk /r several times - windows says the disk is OK. Read the comments on here - is there a fix?

I've had ATF 11 Home for quite a while and decided to do a new complete backup of my laptop to an external drive and I get the dreaded 'cannot read from sector&&&&&&&'. I ignore all but then it stops completely. I see on this and other forums that this is a common problem that Acronis seems to be ignoring. I'm about ready to go back to my Ghost that I used before. This truly sucks!! I've run the chkdsk several times to no avail. I use Vista Home Premium.

Hello all,
Please accept our profound apologies for the delay with the response.
I'll do my best to help you and resolve the issue.
Cojoho, in your case I need additional information to investigate the issue. Please gather Acronis Report as described at this KB article and attach it to your reply to this thread.
Thomas, please do the following to fix the issue:
1. Please check the partition for errors:
- Go to the Command Prompt (Start -> Run -> cmd);
- Enter the command:
- chkdsk DISK: /r
where DISK is the partition letter you need to check. Please note, that checking the C: drive may require you to reboot the machine.
2. If the above step didn't help you, please try the following:
- Download SnapAPI update
- Unpack the archive and run the SnapAPISetup.msi file;
- Go through the wizard screens and hit Proceed to install the update.
(!) You will need to reboot the machine to finish the installation.
Please let me know if the issue still persists.

Ilya,
There has to be some type of fix for this. I had the same issue and just gave up and went to ATIH 2010.
Now I have the same issue but $49 poorer!!
I tried all of the solutions like the SnapAPIsetup, cleaning out the registry ect. I have another post regarding the ATIH 2010 issue.

FYI, here are my experiences after the 'fix':
A few weeks later read from sector errors started again. I ran chkdsk, this time it didn't fix it. A day later, my hard disk crashed.
So, I bought another disk (same make and model as previous, Seagate). All was well using a clean backup image. A few months later, same problem. This time I immediately bought another disk from a different manufacturer (Samsung). No problems since.
It may be that ATIH is aggressively accessing the disk and actually any errors it finds points to it potentially failing badly in the near future. It could also be a subtle timing related error that shows up with particular makes and models of disk. Anyway, I'm assuming now that if these errors come back it is a bad omen for the disk itself. YMMV.

Well, I STILL can't get ATIH 11 to write an image of my C: drive to the external 1T USB drive! I've done multiple chkdsk c:/r 's and found no bad sectors. I've even checked the destination drive! I also read that other USB devices could interfere so I unplugged my wireless mouse and used the keypad. It saves the ACER 'hidden' drive PQSERVICE with no problem but faults out shortly after starting the main drive partition. I've uninstalled the drivers and reinstalled using the suggested snapAPI but, just like for everyone else, it does not make a difference.
Acronis has screwed something up but just won't admit it. That's my theory. It's ashamed because it WAS a great piece of software that I felt good using.
I'm at a loss.....................

Try running the backup from the TI rescue CD which deals with a static disk and take Windows issues out of the picture. Snapapi is the TI driver used for doing live images and is not used with the rescue CD version.
The TI report mechanism as suggested above to Cojoho may help. The TI reporting program, assuming its the same one as above, was very good at finding bad sectors that were missed by chkdsk.

Hello all,
Thomas, first of all we need to localize the issue. Could you please try to make a backup archive using a bootable CD as Seekforever suggested?
Thank you.

Using the bootable CD that came with the program, if I try to backup in Safe Mode, the computer locks up with a blank screen after a few minutes. If I use the Normal Mode, the program goes a short way and stops until I hit the power switch a tap. Then it loads the rest of the way and I can select my C: drive and start the backup. After it backs up about 600 megs of the 120 gigs, the computer shuts down. Tried it 3 times.
This does NOT give me a warm and fuzzy feeling about your software or your support!

Same Problem Yet Again!!!
I have had the same "cannot read from disk sector errors" on two new 500GB backup USB drives. Checkdisk and other more extensive disk tests show no errors whatsoever in these drives and yet Acronis still fails to backup. I tend to agree, seeing the number of posts on this issue, that this is an error that Acronis doesn't want to know about and wishes would just disappear.
Contacting customer support was a dysmal failure too. I have ATIH 2009 edition, purchased less that a year ago (December 2009 to be exact). The Acronis representative told me that "they do not provide support for this product any more". Go figure! Acronis obviously aren't very interested in customer satisfaction it seems. They offered me a $37 upgrade to the 2011 edition but I asked them why I should have to buy it when the 2009 edition that I already own is supposed to work with Windows XP! They couldn't answer that one except to repeat that they don't support this edition any more. There is no guarantee that this latest edition will fare any better so why should I risk more dollars!
Take note folks ... you are probably better off moving to Norton Ghost or NovaBackup rather than Acronis ... they aren't interested in anything but taking your money and delivering a crappy product that doesn't work.

Hello Thomas and Tony,
Thank you very much for your posts. I will definitely help you.
Thomas, I am very sorry for the inconvenience. I checked the report and there are some bad blocks on the partition called Acer. Most likely this is the reason for the backup failure.
Tony, I want to apologize and I will do my best to assist you.
It is possible this error is caused by a different hard drive. I would really appreciate if you can send me a private message with these 2 reports so that I can check them:
1. AcronisInfo report.
2. Acronis report.
Please let me know if you have additional questions.
Thank you.
