file not in backup

Thread needs solution

Using Acronis True Image 2015 build 6525

Is it correct that a file (a compressed drive) is not visible as a file in the disk and files window, and is not backed up and can't be restored. Filename = *.pdv
For me an unwelcome surprise.

Thank you

Hello, Jan.

When you say that it "is not visible as a file in the disk and files window" what exactly do you mean? Does that mean that when you create a new backup plan and select "Files and folders" as the backup source, the file cannot be seen and selected for backup? Or do you simply mean that when you select an existing backup archive and click on "Recover files", it is not there?

In the second case it is possible that the file is excluded from the VSS snapshot. You can check that by viewing the registry. Please bear in mind that serious problems might occur if you modify the registry incorrectly, so take all the precautionary measures

To do that open regedit and navigate to the key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\BackupRestore\FilesNotToSnapshot Look at the values under that key and see if one of them contains the path to the directory where the .pdv file is located, or a mask to exclude all *.pdv files. It could be something like "C:\Your PDV Folder\*.*" or "$AllVolumes$\*.pdv /s". (I have attached a screenshot with an example) If you find a value that fits this description, deleting it should solve your problem

You might also check the attributes to that file by right clicking on the file and choosing properties. If the file show as hidden unhide it, if the files does not have read permissions then that must be changed to allow read.

The file is not visible in the 'files and folders' pane and cannot be selected for backup, your first option.
I did select the drive (with all folders and files) trusting that it would be there for recovery. But not so.
The file properties are normal, not hidden. It is a file generated by the program Privacy Drive, and contains a compressed virtual drive)

Thank you for your answer

This is strange. Where on the disk is this file located? Are there any other files in the same directory? If so, can these files be seen in Acronis True Image? Could you provide a screenshot of what it looks like in True Image?

Problem is resolved!
I created a new backup of my data, and this time the file was visible and could be selected. (This could not be done the last time I tried!)
I checked the backup file and there it was.
I don't know why it did succeed this time.
Thank you for your help!
