First time user, need simple instructions to migrate to SSD

Thread needs solution

I've read a number of threads on here, but haven't been able to find a simple step by step guide for what I assume should be a relatively painless exercise.

I've just bought a new SSD for my home PC, and want to use it to boot Windows 7 (64). Could anyone give me simple step by step instructions to migrate my Windows installation to the SSD so that performance is optimised, whilst the apps and other data reside on the HDD please?

If it's easier and simpler to do fresh installs I may just go that route, as the instructions I've seen so far look fairly complex and time consuming. I was kind of just hoping for a simple solution that required minimal input using the True Image!

It isn't possible with imaging software to restore an operating system to a new disk and leave the applications on another disk. All of the pointers in the registry would be wrong.

If this is really what you want to do, a fresh install is the way to go. You can, of course, leave your data on the HDD, but the programs would have to be reinstalled so that the registry comes out correctly.

If Win7 and your apps are small enough to fit on the SSD, then you can try this. Transfer all of your data files to temporary storage and make sure that the resulting disk space is small enough to fit on the SSD. Then make an image of the disk and restore it to the SSD. When that's working, reformat the HDD and then copy your data back to it.

Welcome,

The complexity depends largely on your hardware and what you are migrating from. If your current disk is SATA, then you shold be able to create a back up image of the entire current disk, and restore it to the new drive. Cloning is another option, but I prefer restoring from back up because this ensures the old drive remains intact.

Other factors such as capacity can come into play. Resizing to larger or smaller drive, etc.

Grover H has written excellent guides about these and other topics.

py6km.. Have I misunderstood your post? Are your programs installed elsewhere??
