getting a blue screen after restore, and then I am getting a Windows restore screen

Thread needs solution

Hi

I am new to this product, so I am not sure if I am using the software right.

a mate, has gave me is copy of the product and I have installed the software and then did a FULL Partition backup of my hard disc onto a USB external drive, "this take hours", then I update my Hard Drive from 250g to 500g. then I restore the image back onto my laptop, choosing all the default locations and choosing the new hard drive as the new target location.

This again take hours :-( once this was done I reboot my laptop and I got a flash of the blue screen of death, and then it recycle back to the bios flash screen, and then it gave me the "Windows recover screen with a error code like 0x000000d7."

Am I doing something wrong or is my image which I made has errors.

I can't go back to my old hard drive as this itself has disk errors and I had to send it back to the manufactures for a replacement.

Any ideas ?

From the error number I take it you are using Windows 7.

Do you have access to either a W7 install DVD or a W7 Repair CD?

The error number probably refers to a device driver problem, but could also be that the BCD in W7 can't actually boot your system. Exactly how far do you get into the booting? Do you get the option to start in Windows Safe mode?

Did you validate the image?

Do you still have access to the image file?

Have you made a rescue CD? - I assume you have in order to restore the image.

If you have answered yes to 2 and 3 then run a validation of the image from the CD - this will take a looooooong time.

What version and build of TI?

As an aside, concerning the time, is your laptop USB1 or USB2? Was 'hours 'an exaggeration or it really took hours rather than feeling like hours?

Hi Colin, thanks for the reply please find my answers below,

Yes I do have access to the W7 Install DVD

Then I tried to so this, the system go as far as the black screen, jusr before the windows Flash, then it gave me a blue screen, then recycle, then rebooted. then it booted into a recover screen, I tried to do a recover of the ssytem, but each time it gave me a blue screen,

Did you validate the image?
This I can't reminder

Do you still have access to the image file?
Yes it is on my NAS Server

Yes I have

The Version I have is Acronis True Image Home (Build 5105)

and no it did take hours, my First image is 113GB which take aprox 4 hours to backup and about 6 hours to restore, my laptop and USB are both USB 2.

I tried 30gb and this only take 40 mins to backup.

At the moment I can only suggest trying a Windows Repair with the installation DVD, you might need to run it a number of times as the repair program only performs one action at a time. I still think the problem is likely to be either Windows can't find a driver for some device or the BCD can't find the booting files correctly.

When you restored the partition did you opt for extending the existing partition or keeping it the same size?

Was the Windows 7 install an original install or an upgrade on the laptop?

I would also suggest validating the image on the external drive.

When you say you did a 'full' partition backup, how many partitions were there on the original disk? It is possible that you've only imaged a partition rather than the complete disk, in which case it is also possible that the laptop BIOS is expecting to find files or a partition that are now missing.

If you have access to a PC with True Image installed, see if you can mount or explore the image, which will at least reassure you as to what is in the image you've made.

Windows 7 was install by myself as I purchase the laptop without a OS, the reason for the restore is that I had a disc fault on my old hard drive.

I just did this and I got a fauled resorted, so I am thinking that the image is "cr**"

then I did a backup I choose all three partitions, the C "Recover disc, The MDR partition, and the C Drive"

I am able to mount the Image, but I am not able to access the USER folder, cos it is saying that I don't have permission.
but I put this down to something build into Windows 7 OS that stops people mouthing images and looking into users folders

on a side note, I am getting a new HD this weekend, so I will be testing the new build that I am doing on my laptop and then try and do a restore onto this new one and see that the resorts are.

OK the fact that you can mount the partition means that your image is 99% OK.

Did you try the validation in Windows or from the rescue CD? If you were trying to validate the file from the NAS it is possible you had a timeout problem.

Did you tick the partitions individually or select the complete disk check box?

In the Recovery panel of TI 2011 click on the 'Switch to Disk' option in the top right hand corner. Also tick the Recover Disk Signature option.

This will, or ought to, recover the image to the same size for the moment of your old drive. You can change the partition size later.

Hi Colin

Sorry for the delay but I had to tranfer my iamge back onto my Pc.

I am not able to vidal my iamge, as it gets to about 98% "less then 30 sec" and then the counter gos all funny and inform me I have 1230 days 25 hours and 23 secs.

Did you tick the partitions individually or select the complete disk check box?
yes I did, I choose each parition, the recover, the MDR and the Data partition.

I am able to restore from the image with no problem as I tryed a few files and folders from my /user/username/.... locations

and I am also able to mouth the drive, but I am not able to access the /user/username folder. I guest this is a part of the windows 7 secuirty.

Are you using the same User name?

You can add that folder to your current user credentails by cright clickin on the folder, choose properties and then click on the security tab.

Click on Advanced and then Owner tab change owner to your current log in.

Hi Colin, yes I am using the same user name, and thanks for you advice, I did it last night some of the folders I am still having problems with but I am slow getting them all.
