Harddrive write protected
I backed up my harddrive to an external usb drive and now that drive is write protected. I am using Windows 8 and Acronis 2013. Is there any way to unprotect that harddrive so I can use it for something other than a backup drive

Barbara,
You need also to be aware of this link relating to booting with the Recovery CD.

Barbara,
I had this happen to an external drive I used as the target of an Acronis True Image 2013 full disk backup from the Linux based 2013 Rescue Media. I stored the .tib backup file on the external drive, and when Windows 8 booted back up, the external drive looked fine, but when I tried to write to it, I was unable to due to the drive being "write protected". I didn't know what to do to correct this, so I moved it to a second system, and it was write protected on that one as well.
After doing some research on this issue (via the internet), I came to the conclusion that it may "cure" itself if left connected long enough to the Windows 8 system. Sure enough, after checking later (no telling how long - but it was a while - I wasn't at the computer) the drive was no longer write protected. I did see that Windows 8 had a process running that was very active that normally is not active much during normal operation of my system (System Interrupts) while the drive was being reported as "write protected". After noticing my drive was working correctly again, the process was back in the normal range of activity. Very strange, and not sure what "fixed" it.
See this article and possible "fix" for you. http://www.daniweb.com/hardware-and-software/pc-hardware/storage/thread…
On the other had, if you performed a clone of one drive to another, Windows 8 will sense the two connected drives having the same Disk Signature and disable the drive for future use with this message: "Offline due to Signature Collision", until you change the Disk Signature on one of the drives.
