Help: Cannot boot PC after cloning to external HD

Thread needs solution

I restored a full backup of main internal drive, incl. MBR, to external HD. Then shut down PC, rebooted, & PC rebooted from external HD. Shut down machine again, disconnected ext. HD, & now my PC will not boot. Please help.

Possibly your internal drive partition table was modified when you did the restore of the MBR to the external drive. If none of the partitions on your internal drive are marked as active (because the external one took over that status) then the boot code won't know how to proceed with booting from that disk. You'll need a CD boot disk based utility to go in and mark your OS partition as active once again to get it to boot.

Unless your external HD is connected through eSATA, Windows OSes will not boot from external drive (at least not all the way) so not sure how you got PC to boot from external HD.

I know just enough about these things to be dangerous, but there are others here who might be able to offer more help.
