how to back up second computer

Thread needs solution

I have true image 2013 which I believe is for 3 machines
How do I go about backing up my second machine when the
first main machine has already been backed up.
But now an older laptop is on its way out and I want to back that laptop up to the same external drive where my main machine back up is
in rediness for a new laptop to be bought and then I want to copy all my files etc to the new laptop from the second true image 2013 backup which will hopfully be sitting on the same external drive
but just under a different header folder
i.e.
Main workstation
Laptop
thanks

If you have a 3-PC licence, then to backup the second PC you would install True Image on that PC. You can backup to the same external drive you use for the first PC's backups, but backup to a different folder. Same for a third PC: backup to a different folder.

Thanks for your quick reply.
So now I have managed to back up that almost dead laptop drives ...C,..D,....E,
into a seperate folder on the external drive and I now want to attach a newer computer via usb2 along with the backed up external drive.
The replacement computer is running windows 7 so where and how do I reinstall the backed up drives to the new computer???

Thanks in advance

What OS did the old PC run (the one whose image you want to restore) ?

The old laptop pc was windows XP service pack 3
The new workstation is on windows 7

To summarize:

- You backed up your WinXP PC.
- You want to restore the image from the WinXP PC to the Win7 PC.

You can't do that. You can't restore an entire XP image to the Win7 PC, as that would wipe out Win7
What you can do is to restore your user data files from the image to the new PC. You would still have to install whatever applications you want.

Hmmm
I understand
So what would you suggest out of the following two alternatives?
1, remove the just put on windows 7 O/S which has no other data on this machine ATM and
Restore all the image which includes win xp
Or
2, just drag n drop copy all tha data from the backed up C,D,E, drives which have been backed up
With Acronis true image 2013 to the external drive on to the win 7 os on the new workstation?

Thanks in advance for all your help.

1. makes not sense. Why would you take a new Win7 PC and overwrite it with XP?
Win7 is a much superior, more secure and more stable OS than XP. Plus, XP has no more mainstream support from MS, and extended support ends in less than a year.

2. Your choice. If those drives are still functional then sure, you could just connect them and use Windows Explorer to copy user files across. That may be simpler for you than using True Image.
