How to delete files restored from XP to vista

I restored files backed up from XP onto a PC running vista not knowing there were associated permissions on the files and directories. But try as i may, i cannot delete them or overwrite them with the permissions off. There are too many files to go through and manually delete by changing the permissions - can anyone help me delete these files.
I am tearing my hair out.
