TI 2009 is unlikely to run properly on W98.

I think your best bet is to make the rescue CD and clone your old drive to the new one.

Thanks for reply
if i clone the old drive, would it (new hdd) work the same way as old drive bootable, so i can switch the old drive to new drive to work again.

Yes!

However it would be advisable if you can to make an image of the drive onto another drive before cloning just in case soemthing goes wrong.

You would be able to image from the rescue CD as well as cloning.

If i can make a full backup image from old drive, why would i need to do cloning again, since the result of backup image would work the same way as cloning (i presume) maybe m wrong. i don't know.

since this is my first time to do that, i would need help to walk me thru step by step. to prevent any failure.
thanks again

YT,

Fuller details later (much later), the onlt reason I suggest making an image before the clone, is that if this is your first time cloning, people have been known to make mistakes and try cloning the wrong drive to the wrong drive ending up with two empty drives especially when starting from the rescue CD.

Before doing anything, make sure you have given your current drive/partitions meaningful labels - right click your drives in My Computer and select properties and rename -give your drive /partition(s) names that mean sometihng to you. With the rescue CD as it uses Linux the drive letters don't always appear as they do in Windows. Drive labels how ever won't change.

Have you made a rescue CD and made sure it will boot your PC?

Thanks for your reply
will go buy CDR and make rescue CD tmrw afternoon.

Hi Colin B.
Thanks for your p.m
Just created bootable cd ver 12.09809 (from my laptop) , and try boot from CD, it worked. I can see drives directory on local laptop

i intend to replace the old drive win98 (40gb) with new drive (80gb).

YT,
Windows 98SE is not supported by version 2009. It will not do any good to install. In order to find a TrueImage that will support 98SE it goes back several years.

You may have some success in downloading the Bootable Media from your registration page/updates and then burn the iso as a different version 2009 Rescue CD. Be aware that it may or may not work. Maybe TrueImage will see the disk as unknown operating system and perform the backup and restore as a sector by sector deal--but I do not know for sure.

If it new CD sees your disk, you will need to create a disk option backup and if you restore to a new disk you will need to perform a disk option restore. These instructions are illustrated in index item #7A inside my signature index below.

Information about burning an iso file can be found in itms 2-G, 2-F and 2-E.

Hello GroverH
thanks your for respond

I have tried the following;
1) successfully created boot-able rescue CD on windows vista notebook Acronis TI home build ver 9,809

2) Boot from Rescue CD on old local computer with external hdd connected to usb port;
Acronis can detect both old "C" drive and external drive

3) create full backup image from source old drive to backup destination external hdd, with unchecked "sector by sector" backup
and do validate backup archive, and was done successfully

4) plug in new internal hdd linked with external hdd, and boot from rescue cd, acronis can see both drive
>>do restore "Disk1" from External hdd to new internal hdd,
and continue
>> do restore "MBR" as well (but not sure if this is important too).

all went smoothly. eventhough not sure if m missing something during the process, pls let me know.
Finally fired up new internal hdd on local PC and run smoothly, however I don't know if any data corrupt, well hopefully not.

The procedures were correct. It sounds like you were successful. Keep the backup just in case you might need it again.

I'm glad you were successful.
