How to find backup info on ext. drive.

Sorry if this has been covered before (probably has, just can't find). I have true image 9 and have the trial true image 11. Before I purchase, how do I see the backup on the external drive. When I go to my computer and click on the drive, I can find the folder, but I can't read it. Do I have to put the rescue disk in. I want to check the data to make sure it's complete. How do I restore a portion of image (ex. My Music). This is important to me before I purchase the product. Thank You in Advance., Vernon.
