How to validate image for multiple partitions?

Thread needs solution

Just purchased TI Home 2010 to back up a newly configured computer. I've got two disks, with 3 partitions each.

Questions:
- How do I confirm my ability to restore all the disks and their partitions, without actually doing it? I am able to "Validate" the backup, but I'm not confident that it would recover the partitions (some are hidden, etc.).
- Do I have to backup all the partitions on both disks to recover them? Or would TI restore the structure even if it didn't have the data for that partition?

Thanks, in advance...

RiverCityBackup:

The only way to confirm is to do an actual restore, preferably to a spare disk. If it works then you can have confidence in your backup method.

Yes, to recover all of the partitions on the disk they all have to be backed up. TI does not restore the partition structure; it re-creates each partition table entry as each partition is restored.

River City:

Hard drives are cheap these days. Buy at least one, be sure to build a TI rescue boot CD, remove your system hard drive, install the new drive in the same place, and then boot the rescue CD and do a restore. You will be very pleased when your new drive suddenly boots and runs like the old one that you have safely stored.

Thanks to both of you for helpful, on-target answers (and the advice). I'm going to try the drive replace/restore this weekend!
