I have True Home 2009 -- is there a explanation somewhere about what I'd gain if I upgraded to the newest version?

Thread needs solution

My laptop is dying and I'd like to know if I'd have a better shot at transferring data to my new computer.

I really like 2009 but kinda hated the extra steps it made me do just to perform an immediate backup. Has that been fixed?

William,
Do you need a new version of Acronis to back up your current system, no.

However, the latest version will pretty much ensure compatibility with your new OS and hardware. Why not use the same version/build to back up as well as restore data to the new machine. While a newer version should read .tib files created with older versions of the software, why chance it. You'll likely need and use the newer version anyway. I'm not sure what "extra" steps you are referring to. I guess this is based on personal experience.

The improvements since 2009 are vast. Hardware support alone justifies the expense in my opinion.

OK, I'll bite on the new version, but I was looking for some sort of explanation as to what exactly has been improved.

You're right -- a situation like this is no time to pinch pennies.

Here's my dilemma though: I intend to install the new version, do a full backup to an external HD, then reset my dying Dell to factory settings to see if that fixes it. If not, I'll have to buy a new one.

How does one install Acronis on the reset Dell or new laptop to perform the retrieval of the backup?

I would recommend the following. Purchase the new version. Register your serial number on the Customer Portal. Download the latest build for the version you purchased, and download an .iso for Acronis Boot Media. Burn/Create a Boot CD.

Use it to boot and back up the current image of your laptop. If you are concerned, make a back up of your data/files as well.

Reset the laptop. If successful, install ATIH. Now you have a fresh install and Boot Media. Restore your files or partitions as desired, keeping in mind that images created from systems or disks experiencing problems often migrate with their images. In this case, only restoring the data is recommended.

If you data is at risk, I would immediately back it up and worry about the laptop after the fact.
