Thread needs solution

Hi There, depsite searching I can really see an answer to my question.

I have just got a new hard drive put into my DELL PC. The previous one had a recovery partition which allowed me to press a key combo at start up which then recovered the PC back to factory state.

I am going to cut a long story short here by saying that despite reading the instructions for ATI2010Home I just don't quite understand the manual.

Here is what I would like to do.

1) Partition the new hard drive so that I can put a recovery partition so that when I start the PC I just press a key combination at bootup. It goes into recovery mode and it will restore the main C drive back to what it was.

or

2) Save the info to DVD's so that I can just put a DVD in and it does the rest.

I have saw the key words mentioned in the Instructions but I can get them together.

Can anyone help me please?

The Hard Disk is a 500Gb hard disk with Vista Home premium

The recovery partition contains the information to reset your PC to where it was when it exited the assembly line. If you use it, it will erase all the programs and content you have added since then.

To move to a new disk, you need a disk and partition backup of your current disk. You can save this back up on DVDs. If I were you, I would save it on a USB disk. It is faster and more reliable.

You don't need to partition the new disk. When you restore using your Acronis backup, you will get the system back to were it was.

To succeed, you will need your Acronis recovery CD. Boot the computer on the recovery CD and create a backup of the disk (check the box at the disk level). Note that on the disk the disk letters are different from what they are in windows. Pay attention to the disk name and label.

Peter,
Along the left margin of this webpage, there is a bunch of "Useful Links". Check out the 2011 Lite Guide. It is a good place to start.

Pat L - Thanks for that it worked a treat.

GroverH - Many thanks for your advice I will be checking that out.

Once again the wisdom of the many helped noobies - I thank you all for the time and effort you all put in.
