Image created is larger than the source

Thread needs solution

I am currently running Vistax64 and ATI 2009 9709. I made a new image of my system partition last night. My system partition is 46.6G and the image is 76.3G. I used default compression. In my experience the image has always been smaller than the source. Can anyone explain why my new image is 30G larger than my system partition? This seems very strange to me.

Hello JohnnyDollar,

Thank you for using Acronis True Image

There can be file system errors or bad blocks on the system partition, in this case Acronis True Image Home 2009 will create a sector-by-sector backup which includes the whole partition to an image. In order to investigate the issue I would recommend you to check the disks for errors:

- Go to the Command Prompt (Start -> Run -> cmd)

- Enter the command: "chkdsk DISK: /r" (where DISK is the partition letter you need to check) for every partition that is visible in My Computer. Please note, that checking the C: drive may require you to reboot the machine.

Also make sure that you are using the latest build of the program. Check it in Help -> About. You can always download the latest build of the program from your account under Registered Products.

ATI includes some checksum every so many bytes so that it can later "validate" a backup and that's added data, but not much. Even goin sector by sector shouldn't yield way more bytes than the partition being backed up.

In Vista and W7, Windows Restore can greatly add to the number fo used bytes on a partition, making backups eventually beocme twice the size of backups made early on. But again, you're not going to end up with way more bytes in a backup than all the partitions that are inlcuded inthe backup.

Don't mean to sound condescending but are you sure you are not doing a full disk backup and the disk has multiple partitions (perhaps some pc manufacturer hidden partitons, or such).

If none of these things apply. try running backup from the CD if you normally run it form windows, or vice versa and see if it makes a diff. It could be a prob with the linux version or with win installation.
