Incremental backup of one large file

Thread needs solution

Hi,
i using Acronis True Image Home 2009. Situation:
- one large file - 4GB,
- a create full data backup from this one file, without compression,
- next, i change only one byte in this original file, at the beginning,
- now i create incremental databackup and surprise, incremental data file has size again 4GB.

Why ATI 2009 don't compare file content?
True Image Home 2010 work on same principle?

Thanks.

If it was comapring content, it would have to go through the entire original file and the backup set which would take as long as reading it for a backup and just writing a new backup. If you expect to make very small changes to really big files, incremental is not the best way to go. You'd be better off just doing full backups and limiting the number of backups kept. Another advantage of doing full backups is that, if any one of the backup files becomes corrupt for any reason, it won't affect the entire set; each full backup is independent of the others.

Btw, if you were doing Partition backups, only changed sectors/clusters would be in the increments rather than the entire source file, although partiton backups might not be appropriate for your particular situation.

Thanks for answer. Btw, mentioned files is regular file from TrueCrypt, partition in file, 20GB.
I try design safe way to backup private data (incremental, difference) with preservation of TrueCrypt privacy.

With the next verison of ATI Home 2011 you'll be able to back up separate files using Non-stop bakcup feature. It will back up only so called "deltas". This means backing up not entire changed files, but only differences between new and old versions. For example, if you use Microsoft Outlook or
Windows Mail, your pst file may be very large. Furthermore, it changes with each received or sent Email message. Backing up the entire pst file after each change would be a big waste for your storage space, so Acronis backs up only its changed parts in addition to the initially backed up file.

Nowadays, in ATI Home 2010, Non-stop Backup is only availbale for image backup. But anayway, we can exclude all the files except the ones you need.

Hello Rustam -

Is this true, that 2011 NSB backsup only the deltas?
