Ipod shuffle 4th generation won't work with Acronis on WIN7 64-bit

Thread needs solution

I have been successfully using an iTouch and 2nd generation shuffle on a 64-bit Win 7 Dell studio with Acronis installed. I have just got a 4th generation shuffle and when I connected it to a usb port it gave a failed to install message.

Connecting the 2nd generation shuffle now gives that error also, as did the iTouch at first, but I have now got that working again.

Burrowing down in the device manager for Apple Ipod USB Device->Properties->Driver->Driver Details I found certified entries for disk.sys and partmgr.sys, and an uncertified entry for snapman.sys, which is an Acronis driver.

So suspecting that Acronis might be the culprit, I uninstalled it.

And the shuffle now loads correctly, though, interestingly, uninstalling the Acronis software did not remove snapman.sys, which still appears uncertified in the Driver Details list.

As a bonus, the card readers built into the PC now work again.

I would really like to be able to use the shuffle and Acronis together - is this possible?

Intersting. ATI is using the same driver name as always but apple appears to have changed, generating a conflict. Have you contacted Apple about the apparent conflict?

I'm not sure if you are suggesting that Apple may be using a driver called snapman and this is clashing with Acronis.

However, I don't think this is the case since having removed Acronis and snapman.sys, the shuffle is not reinstalling its own snapman.

The problem seems to have been that snapman was defined as an upper filter for temporary drives but wouldn't load for either the shuffle or the card reader. I am not sure if this has anything to do with the fact that it wasn't recognised as certified, which I think may be an issue for 64-bit win7.

Anyway, having removed snapman, both the shuffle and card reader work. Though, as it happens, not both at the same time, but I have already spent too long on this, so I am not going to pursue that any further as it is not a big issue for me.

On the other hand, I do need back-up software, and would like to use Acronis as it does what I need, but if I can't get it to work with the shuffle I will need to look elsewhere.

There are problems with some versions of the snapman driver and card readers. Are you using the latest version/build of TI?

That's what I was thinking, but your work seems to point in another direction.

I think you have two options to use ATI. 1) run it ftom the Boot CD. 2) contact support and see if they can't provide a diff snapman

The fnapman file is:

Version 3.8.0.517
Date modified: 4/9/2010

So my guess is that it is pretty up to date,

I really need it to run automatically every day otherwise it just won't happen, so I don't think running from a Boot CD would work for me. The PC has a vista partition, so I could run in that, but again that wouldn't be automatic.

On the other hand, I guess I could try running it in an XP box in Win7. Do you know if that is likely to cause any problems?
