Loader fatal error while booting from rescue cd after low-level format
My disk had many SMART errors and the manufacturer's test program recommended low-level format.I created a bootable CD with True Image Home 2011, created an image of the disk and used said test program to format the disk.
When I tried to boot from the rescue CD to recover the disk image, I got the following message: "Loader fatal error: Boot drive (partition) not found." This happened even when there was no hard disk attached to the computer. The CD works on another computer and I can boot this computer just fine with other CDs. So how can I recover my disk image? So far the only idea I've come up with was to install Windows on another disk, install the trial version of True Image Home and then recover the image to the original disk.
So, is there a better method?

I can only replace the disk if the manufacturer's program report it as faulty. It does not. But the problem has nothing to do with that disk, as I had this problem even when it wasn't attached.
I have set the BIOS to boot from the CD and it does boot from it. I don't see Acronis' logo, but the full message reads: "Acronis Loader fatal error: Boot Drive (Partition) not found. Press "enter" to try to load your OS."
Hmm, on 2nd thought, does Acronis True Image install a loader in the MBR? If that's the case, perhaps I'm not booting from the CD after all.

Seems to be the same as here http://forum.acronis.com/forum/23374

It sounds like your recovery CD doesn't contain the files it needs. Did you try it on another computer? did you try it before?
ATI does install a loader in the MBR when you activate the Acronis Startup Recovery Manager, but not when you just boot the computer on the CD.

As I wrote, the CD boots just fine on another computer. I did not test it on my computer before formatting - not the wisest of choices, in hindsight.

It is possible that the CD just doesn't see the disk at all, but the message doesn't quite correspond to this.
The message doesn't correspond to a lack of drivers either.
If you have another computer where you can put your faulty drive in, boot on the CD and restore, this should work. You will have to remove the disk from that computer before rebooting it (the other computer nevers boots with its current disk and your current disk in)

Can't - the other computer is a laptop. Besides, I get this error message even when no hard disk is connected.

You see, *if* the Acronis CD is not designed to boot on a computer without a hard drive that can become a system disk, it would fail in the case where there is no hard disk, and it would fail in the case where the disk inside is not valid.

It also failed when another disk was connected, one with no SMART errors whatsoever.

This other thread points to a Linux driver issue that would show the same apparently unrelated message, so I guess this is a possibility in your case as well.

Quoting yourself, eh? ;-) But what can I do now? I can't even use the plus pack I've paid for to create a WinPE media, to access it I need to recover my Windows installation! It's a sort of a 'catch 22' situation: if I can use it, I don't need to; if I need to use it, I can't.

To make a long story short - I've reassembled an old computer I used for spare parts and used that one to recover the image. It took a while - the program claimed my USB attached backup drive was unreadable, had to connect it to another computer and copy the disk image to another drive which the rescue CD liked better. It also wouldn't work with my mouse and won't let me work with keyboard only, but I managed to find a mouse it did recognize.
All in all I can say that while Acronis True Image Home is a very capable, reliable and easy to use program, its emergency rescue part is one of the stinkiest pile of manure I had the displeasure of using. Hopefully the plus pack can create a better boot CD.

I get the same error. I have been using Acronis for many years - successfully on my XP desktop. I purchased a Toshiba Satellite Pro L300-EZ1525 (XP also) and find that ATI Home 10 (or 2009 for that matter ) will NOT boot from the Toshiba CD/DVD drive. The same Acronis bootable CDs DO work in my desktop.
The error that shows up is "
Acronis Loader fatal error: Boot drive (partition) not found. Press to try to boot your OS . . .
Should I really have to restore a second hard drive on another machine - then transfer it to my laptop? Is that what ATI is really about?? Is there a BIOS incompatibility between the ISO file burned to CD (yes, I do know how to do it) ? Again, the CD does work in my desktop.
I really hope you can redeem yourselves with a solution that will restore my Toshiba.

Hi Phillip,
If you change your BIOS setting to IDE, does it boot from the CD?

It WILL then boot from the CD, but then on loading ATIH it throws up a message saying it doesn't see any hard drives. This was using both the just downloaded ISOs for ATIH 10 and ATIH2011. On boot an error comes up relating to a bridge 7 .

Yeah... I was expecting it would not see the drives...
I guess you are facing a Linux driver issue with your disk controller on your laptop. There is not much you can do:
- download the latest bootable media for your version from your acronis account, burn is *as an ISO* on a CD (not a regular file burning process)
- download ATI 2012, create a bootable CD and try that,
- create a BART-PE recovery CD (you should be able to do this since you are using XP). This uses Windows drivers, so you have better chances.

I already tried the first option as described with no luck.
I haven't "upgraded" to ATI 2012 (would you spend another $30 on the "chance" that it "might" work?). I don't think I can access an ISO download without a registered copy of 2012.
How do I create a BART-PE recovery CD from ATIH 10?
