Making A Complete Copy Of A Surface Pro 2 512 GB Drive
Surface Pro 2 512 GB
Surface Pro 2 Docking Station
Windows 8.1 Pro
I want to make an exact copy of my drive so I have a fallback in case my upgrade to Windows 10 is not acceptable.
I started True Image and selected disk backup. I then went into the options and select sector level and backup unallocated sectors. The back up is running now -- this is a different machine.
I thought True Image would have to reboot to do a true sector by sector backup of the entire disk. I don't understand how it stops Windows from making changes to the contents of the disk (i.e. writing to the System Event log) that could causes sectors that have yet to be copied to be out of synch with sectors that have already been copied.
Does the process have to be run from bootable media -- not easy to do with the Surface Pros.
What am I missing?

The backup completed. The size of the file on the backup drive is 263 GB while the drive that was backed up was 512 GB. As far as I know I did not ask for any kind of compression. I also cannot find any evidence that a validation was done even though I did request it.
