Manual Differential Backups

Thread needs solution

I have a full backup and want to follow that with Differential backups. How do I do that manually please.?
I know I can set it up to do it by schedule, but I have lost all faith in scheduled backups as sometimes they work, and sometimes they don't work.
Would I be better to just do full backups and overwrite each time, although it would a bit lonely on a 1TB external drive. Anyone have any thoughts on the matter.?

If you set up your backup as a differential backup, ATI will create a full backup and then differential backups, whether it runs manually or on schedule.

As Pat has indicated, create a non-scheduled task to create your backups and then click on he "create shortcut" option inside the Operatiion Tab. Afterward, click on the newly created desktop shortcut anytime you want a backup created.; or add the shortcut to the Windows Task Scheduler and let Windows run your task.

Sorry GroverH, but I can't see within the Operation Tab where I can "create shortcut"
can you help further please.? If I decide to use the Windows Task Scheduler which .exe file do I point it at please.?

I was referring to the current version but it can be done using 2010 or 2009 but is more difficult to set everything up.

What version of TI are you usinig.

Your prior posting has pictures of how to create the shortcut and how to set it up with the Windows Task scheduler. If you do not want it follow a schedule, there is an option in the Windows Scheduler not to follow a schedule.

Unfortunately when I click on 'create shortcut' nothing happens, despite a reinstallation of Acronis.
If I use windows scheduler I presume I point it at "TrueImage.exe.?

Have you checked your desktop screen very carefully? The shortcut will appear on the desktop with the name of task as its label.

I hang my head in shame, I am not even going to blame old age.
The shortcut is there amongst many others. That will teach me for having such a cluttered desktop. Will see how the windows scheduler works. Once again GroverH, thankyou for your extreme patience.

Nefat,
Let me revise what I wrote. If you do not plan to schedule a backup, you do not need to use the Windows Task Scheduler. If you want to create a manual backup, simply click on the desktop shortcut whenever you want TI to create a backup. Clicking the shortcut will start TIH and perform whatever task you have the task options set for.

The only time you need to use the Windows Task Scheduler is when the TrueImage scheduler will not do a comparable scheduling and the Windows Task Scheduler is your alternate.

Yes, I understand that but think I will try the windows scheduler because I certainly had no luck with the TI scheduler, for me, it was extremely unreliable. If all else fails I will do manual backups. Cheers.

GroverH,
Can you please answer the original question:
'If I have a successful full backup and want to add an unscheduled manual differential backup' How is that done.
Thank you in advance.

Methods may vary between versions.

If desiring to add a differential backup to an existing task from within Windows,
the original task backup scheme must have planned for future differentials by the selection of options within the backup scheme.

Clicking the "backup now" option (or clicking a desktop backup shortcut--if exist) will add backups to whatever backup scheme you selected. If the scheme was differential or custom/differential, the differential will come after the full backups.

If the original scheme did not plan for future differentials:

a: if you want the diff created from within Windows, you will need to create a new task and plan for the diff type backup. See link #2 below, figure 11-Diff. (A diff cannot be added to an existing task unless it was planned in advance by the proper selection of backup scheme options. Editing an existing task to add these options has not proven always successful, thus a new task is my recommended solution--rather than editing.)

b. Or, Using the Recovery CD, it is possible to add differential backups to the original full. From the CD,
.. The "Target Backup Archive" screen provides the opportunity to select the
"Add to existing Backup archive" option.
.. after the selection, note the listing of optional steps in lower left margin of most screens.
... Under the Backup options, the diff type can be selected as the type of backup to be created and added as a new dependent file after the full.

More info about this can be found in the user manual for your version.

Seems to me that clicking "Backup Now" resulted in a complete backup despite having created a differential backup scheme. I'll give it another go.
Thank you very much for your response and sharing your expertise.

Start with a fresh backup scheme as illustrated in link #2 below, illustration 11-Diff. Adjust the 6 and 4 examples to fit your own needs.

Point the task to a new or empty sub-folder--no mixing of backup files from other tasks.
