My last backup failed - don't understand why

Thread needs solution

View log said, "The disk is full cannot perform this operation."

My backup schemem was Single Version which is suppose to overwrite a full backup version every time. Why didn't it over write a full backup version made to the same disk the day before?

Plese don't double post-- it's like shouting or leaning on the doorbell or repeatedly calling the same number to try to get attention and is a rudeness that dissaudes others from helping. Worse, it eats up time that could be used to help polite people.

If ati deleted the existing backup before it succeffully completed the next backup, then then you'd be left with no backups if ati malfunctioned, or power went out or any of a number of other things prevented a successful backup. So ati makes the next backup first, and then, if all goes well, it checks for limits being exceeded. This is a sensible, conservative strategy for a security program like backup imagiging software. so, as Grove pointed out, you have to leave room for at least one more backup.

Thank you for pointing out the sequence ATI uses --- I would like to backup my system partion to a SMI drive that only has 29GB formatted capacity. It's a close fit. I wonder how to reduce the size of the backup file?
1) Are there additional files I can exclude; I use the default settings, pagefile is set to goto logical drive D.
2) Can the backup file be compressed?
3) I run cClean before backing up, and when needed Defragment. Is that enough?

By default the backup file will be compressed, You have options for hi, lo or normal comporession. Lo comrpession can be slightly faster. If you run at high compresson, you might save a little bit of room but will sacrifice a lot of time.

You can check the settings and see if *.tmp *.bak files are excluded -- Ithink that's the default but you can check-- yo almost always can delete thsoe files without harm. ati automatically "excludes" page and hibernation files (it uses only placeholders since win can rebuild these files if and when it boots up from the stored image).

See if there are any big pdfs, mps, movs, or mpegs that you don't need backed up and remove those from the disk before backing up (those can take up a lot of room and those files don't compress much if any either).

Or, just buy another or a bigger back up drive and not worry. Drives are cheapest bargain in computing these days.

While looking for files that can be removed from the disk I came across Bootwiz - I tried to delete it and was told it was in use. Later I ran a degramentation program and after it completed running it said Bootwiz was still defragmented. -- how can I get rid of Bootwiz?

Also, when I clicked on Details in ATI, My Backups it said, "Acronis Security Zone not found." I nolonger use Acronis Security Zone. Why is ATI looking for ASZ? Are ASZ and Bootwiz related?

If yo have a file you can;t delete, try unlocker.exe. It's free and works for very simple situations where another program is holding a file open and preventing the file from being deleted.

sometimes yo have to reset the atrtibutes and then use unlocker or file-delete.

There are harder probs having sometimes to do with metadata (even some probls that chkdsk won't detect such as case differences) that you can still conquer.

ONe method I've found that is reliable, make a file with the same name, do a file backup of that new file with acronis. Resotre that file with ati to a new location -- the new location should be where the problem file is-- tell ati to overwrite any existing file. After that, you can delete the file.

I downloaded and installed unlocker. It did not work with bootwiz. I'll keep unlocker for future use

I made a file with the same name -- that didn't work either. How can I get rid of bootwiz?

I Googled for info about bootwiz -- found out its an Acronis file used to run multiple OSs I only want to run Win7, 32-bit on this notebook. Does Acronis have a cleaner?

do you have disk director?

I changed back to normal compression.

I clicked on Start, where it said "Search programs and files", I typed *.pdf and pressed Enter. No matches found, so I tried *.doc - No matches found.

How should I check for differtent file types stored on drive C? I am running Win 7.

Yes ... I have Acronis, Disk Director 11 Home Update 2 (BUILD 11.0.2343]
