NAS Cloud Backup -- Online Backup or Sync?

I recently upgraded from TI2011 to TI2013 due to the appeal of improved Cloud Sync/backup scenarios.
I back up my PCs to a DroboFS, as well as store all my music/photos, etc. I had been using iDrive to back up the Drobo to their cloud storage, but would like to switch to Acronis.
However, it appears as if Online Backup still only support local disks, not file shares. Is this still the case?
I was able to create a "poor-man's NAS backup" by using the Sync tab to sync the network file share to the Acronis cloud.
Is there any downside to using this method rather than Online Backup?
