Need advice on backup task

Thread needs solution

Hi. I give up trying to get this done in TI 2009. I know it has to be easy, but....

My objective:
* One monthly full backup
* Daily differential backups
* ALL backups delete the previous backup. Differentials delete the previous differential ; full backups delete the previous full backup.

I accomplished with pretty good success in the previous TI version (11 I think) using .bat files as pre-process commands. However, the same batch files are not working. The names of the backups keep getting numbered with different numbers than my batch file deletes.

For example, my pre full backup batch file comtians:
if exist "P:\C DRIVE BACKUP FOLDER\C DRIVE FULL BACKUP.tib" DEL "P:\C DRIVE BACKUP FOLDER\C DRIVE FULL BACKUP.tib"

My pre differential backup batch file comtians:
if exist "P:\C DRIVE BACKUP FOLDER\C DRIVE FULL BACKUP2.tib" DEL "P:\C DRIVE BACKUP FOLDER\C DRIVE FULL BACKUP2.tib"

I suspect I can accomplish my objective without bat files now, but how? I really don't care what it takes, as long as it works.

Thanks to all who reply!

Hello Eliot,

Thank you for using [[http://www.acronis.com/homecomputing/ | Acronis True Image Home 2009]]

Here is one method for creating fixed number of full backup archives suggested in old forum:

1) At the "Backup method" step choose either "Incremental" or "Differential" method, select the "Create a new full backup after" checkbox and set "0" (zero) in the number of backups field. This will result in creating only full backups, but, in addition, will enable the "Automatic consolidation" step (disabled for the "Full" backup method), which will be needed for ensuring automatic deletion of the oldest backup.

2) At the "Automatic consolidation" step select the "Number of backups exceeds" checkbox and set a limit of 4 backups.

The program will create 4 full backups, then on the 5th run it will create a fifth backup thus exceeding the limit set on the number of backups. ATIH can't consolidate full backups, so it will simply delete the oldest one. This procedure will be repeated during the next task run, etc.
You must have space for at least 5 fulls. If there is not enough room for the 5th backup, the task run will be aborted, and the program will neither create a new backup, nor delete the oldest one.

In order to created fixed number of differential backup archives you should use Consolidation and maximum number of backups should be equal 2. Check user guide for more information regarding this feature.

Dmitry,

That method seems to work well, but it also results in an error message being logged every time the task is run and a file is deleted. This (I assume) is what makes it show up as a failed task (red square) on the calendar.

Thank you Dmitry. I will give it a try, Wooleysdad  (changed my name)

Hello Wooleysdad,

Thank you for using [[http://www.acronis.com/homecomputing/ | Acronis Products]]

I may also recommend you to have a look to the following article. It will allow you to set up a Pre-Backup command that will automatically manage backup files saved to a local disk.

Dmitry, or anybody who knows the answer - I am sure I am missing something, but I can't quite get TI 2009 to do what I need. I want to simplify this.

All I want to do is create a differential backup every day (daily) and save only the last backup. In other words, before or after the differential backup completes, I want the previous one deleted. Shouldn’t something like this be standard? Unless you are worried about data corruption in your backups, what is the point in having multiple differential backups? The whole idea is to allow you to restore with 2 files - the original backup and the differential - isn't it?

I am not concerned about full backups in this question, except in the sense that I need to tell TI on which full back to base the differential backups. I am not concerned about multiple full backups or consolidation. I will work on that later.

So, at the risk of being repetitive, what settings will produce a daily differential backup, and only save the differential backup just created, while leaving the full backup unchanged?

I hope this question is clear. If I still can’t quite get it, is there a number I can call for “how to” questions?

Thanks for all your help.
