Need help, Acronis is reporting more versions than what is actually present.....

Thread needs solution

Hello,

I have Acronis True Image Home 2013. I am experiencing a problem where on the summary screen that shows the backups that are present, the number of versions for a file backup is greater than what is actually present.

A little background first....

I had several file backups present and I wanted to change the settings so I decided it would probably be a better idea to start fresh and delete both the entire backups and the settings and start new by creating new file backups. So I deleted the file backups and the setting to where there was nothing showing on the backups screen/page. I went into my external hard drive via windows explorer to verify everything was deleted.

Next, I setup the file backup the way I wanted (attached images will show more detail) and ran the backup even though it was not one of the days I had scheduled the backup for. The backup was ran yesterday. I had setup the file backup to run every Monday, Thursday and Saturday at 11pm. The backup is setup as "Custom", "Differential" and create a full version after 11 differential versions. Automatic cleanup includes - store no more than 3 recent version chains.

Once the initial backup was completed, the main page that shows the file backups that are present showed that there were 11 versions even though the backup was only ran once. I proceeded to delete the entire backup and settings again and start over. I chose the same settings again as explained above and in the photos shown below. This time, after running the backup only once (yesterday), it showed that 3 versions are present (also shown in the photos below).

Am I doing something wrong or do I need to uninstall the software and reinstall it? I appreciate any help as this is frustrating me and I want the backup to be reliable so I don't have to worry about whether it is a good backup or not.

Thank you!

Automatic deletion will not begin until after the creation of the 4th full ( backup #37) as you are keeping 3 chains of 12 each and then chain 1 of 12 files will be deleted.

As for your problem. Do a couple inspections.
1. Go inside the Home Photos task and click on the destination and view how many files listed and then close the folder.
2. Go inside the Homt Photos task and click the gear wheel--located extreme right corner.
Then click on the "Recover files" option. Acronis Backup & explorer will open.
Note the files listed along the bottom row. Are the same number of files listed? You may have to click the column headers located in top left of the screen.
3. Let me know the results of inspection.

For future creation. I would suggest that each task point to a different folder or sub-folder with no mixing of backups from multiple tasks.
Also each task and each different tib name should have a different name so there is no duplication of old or new backups or files, etc.

4. After the inspection if no match, you mght try this repair.
Simulate a restore by clicking the "Recovery" button in upper right of Home Photos task.
Work your way through the settings and see if you can get any error messages which you can click ignore or retry. Don't do a restore. Just try to get the program to find that files are missing an correction will be made.

Supplement:
When creating a new task and task is to be scheduled, just before saving, click the "Backup Later" option rather than the "Backup now" option. This will create the task without any backups. YOu an then allow the schedule to create the task; /or go inside the task and click the "backup Later" option if you want a backup to be created immediately manually. Two links below.

The results of the inspection:

1. In the destination there is 1 file listed - the full backup (see attached photo #1 below).
2. The number of files in the bottom row while under "recover files" is 1 (see attached photo #2 below).

Regarding your recommendation of having a separate task for each folder to be backed up rather than combining different folders from the same or different hard drives into one task....

3. What if I have a single folder with 100 subfolders inside of it. Would your recommendation be to create 100 separate tasks or would creating 1 task in this situation be ok?

4. I did try the repair you suggested and found no errors, it responded as though the recovery process would go through with no problems.
5. You mentioned not backing up right after creating a task with a schedule....is there a reason for this or just a preference because I like to create an initial backup right away after creating the task rather than waiting for the scheduled one. I have never had this problem before when setting up file backups.

6. I think it is also important for you to know that when I am working within Acronis True Image software there are several times where all of a sudden I get a message that states "Acronis has stopped working" and the program closes. I then have to reopen it and start over. There is no single place within the program where this consistently happens, it is random and I must say it happens quite often. Could this be related to why I am getting different values for the number of versions present? Should I uninstall the program and reinstall?

Thanks again for your help!

5. You don't have to wait. You can save the task as later and immeditely open the task and click the "Back Up now" option. Mostly a matter a preference but looking at the task first helps to catch any errors before the first backup is created.
3. You can have as many sub-folders as you wish under one header. What I am suggeting is that each task has its own individual storage folder so there is no mixing of tib files. None of the task should be exact duplicates as each task should have it own set of disks or folders to be backed up.
I would only expect you to have a few tasks--most certainly no large number.
1. Compare the file sizes between attachment 1 and 2. Not even close.
Close TrueImage and use Windows Explorer and browse to the folder where the single file is listed (1.jpg).
Right click on the file name and from the right click menu, click on the TrueImage folder and select the Validate option. Does it validate or do you get errors?

If you are not able to get the issue corrected, you can stop using your current task and start a new task with a new storage folder. Or, uninstall-run the cleanup utility and then re-install.

added:
Look again inside the task via this access route. Try also the validate option (do not use the delete options) from inside the Acronis Backup Exploerer.
GH5. How to delete backup files using Acronis Backup 'Explorer'

Thank you Grover for your help. I went ahead and uninstalled the software and re-installed it. It is now reporting the correct versions of the backups. I do have one other question for you......

1. Since I reinstalled the software, the icon is not in the windows 7 taskbar. Before I uninstalled True Image Home, the icon appeared in the Windows 7 taskbar and I could access the program that way. It does not seem to be causing any problems, but I would like it to be there. The scheduled backups still run automatically even though it is not present so I don't think it is going to be a problem, however, if there is a way that you know of to get it back I would like it there again.

Again, I am using Windows 7 64bit. As a side note, when I choose "customize" under the taskbar, there is a mention of Acronis True Image and I have selected to show icon and notifications but it doesn't seem to make any difference. I have included 2 photos to illustrate what I am explaining. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks again!

To make TrueImage more accessible, Go to The Start Menu (lower left) and browse to the link which starts the True Image program.
RIGHT CLICK on that link and choose the option "Pin to Start Menu"
That will make it much easier to start from the Menu.

Another option would be to drag the startmenu link onto the desktop and then you could start it from your desktop shortcut.

The systray in lower right will only display the small icon when the program is active or running. Your settings are correct.

the scheduled backups still run automatically even though it is not present

Please provide more details.
How many tasks listed on your main menu?

Look in our scripts folder (probably C:\PROGRAMDATA\ACRONIS\TRUEIMAGEHOME\SCRIPTS)
and see how many scripts listed--usually two per task. For more info about each script, the scripts can be opened with Notepad.

Also, the log file for that task will show the script number.

this might be the answer to your tray icon issue.
