new SSD Kingston HyperX - cloning HDD (bigger then ssd and containing 3 partitions)
First of all i’d like to say ‚hello’. I’m just another new guy with some more or less serious problems ;-)
Situation looks like this…
I got myself a brand new SSD. Kingston Hyper X 240GB. It came with a clone software from Acronis but I don’t recall right now which version.
System now looks like this: Windows7 pro 64bit. SSD 240GB installed (containing a not working copy of my hhd win7 install). Actual system disc is a 750GB Samsum Spinpoint with 3 partitions. The first is completely empty. The second is about 223gb big and contains win7. The third partition ist empty.
I want to clone my win7 partition and run it on my ssd. Kinda surprising, isn’t it?
What I did until now and what left me rather frustrated.
First I did as the manual contained with the software said:
1) Install SSD
2) Put in CD and reboot
3) Boot Acronis TIH and clone the selected drive and put it on your ssd
Okay. I stopped this when I got to the point where the cloning method lead to 3 (proportional) partitions on my ssd. I don’t want this. So I tried some other method.
I used GParted to copy the relevant partition from my old hdd to the ssd. The ssd was empty and before I copied the win7 partition I also deleted the registry key “mounteddevices”.
But whatever I do I can’t get the damn ssd to boot my win7.
Right now the ssd contains a full cloned image of my win7. The ssd is also set as primary boot device. But everytime I boot it uses the old win7 on my hdd......
I kinda figured that I should give Acronis TIH another try (after I read all those threads on this forum). But I don’t wanna do anything wrong and there are so many rather complicating things to look at that I’m really irritated.
What do I have to do to get my old win7 transferred to my ssd?
1) merge the three old partitions on my hhd to get one new big one (containing the win7 install)?
2) Delete the win7 installation on my ssd and do what? I already did this some times therefore. I know that there will be a small fragment of 1 mb size in front of the (new) partition.
3) Use Acronis and pick which option to clone? “As is” won’t work because of the different sizes. Maybe proportional?
4) And afterwards? Reboot with the ssd as first device and leave the old hdd connected or should I remove it? I do wanna use this hdd as a big storage device afterwards
I hope you can help me out. I’m pretty sure you can ;-)
THX!!!!

Thanx Pat L!
I hope you can help me out with another huge problem now.
During my attempts to copy/transfer/clone my old win7 install i srewed my whole set up.
You saw this? - What do I have to do to get my old win7 transferred to my ssd?
1) merge the three old partitions on my hhd to get one new big one (containing the win7 install)?
I merged the three partitions. Guess what happened? After some repair start ups using the win7 dvd i managed to boot my old win7 install.
But i got an empty desktop and nothing won't work. I had to use strg+alt+del to get the taskmanager running and start the explorer. But nothing else is working.
I asked for help on a local forum. They said it it a problem with the "user" folder. Win7 simply lost trace. They advised me to create a new partition on that disk rename it the way it was named before and copy the whole "user" folder to that partition.
Now Windows7 will boot, but only to a black screen including a cursor arrow. But still nothing else there and nothing else working. Using the tasmanager and explorer leads to a desktop looking almost as before the whole damn mess started. But no programm will work. I can't open regedit. I thought i might find a solution going this way.
I attached a screenshot to this post.
Device C: is the newly created partition on the old hd.
Device F: contains my old win7 (which i wanna get back)
Device D: is the ssd.
Please. Can you help me out of this mess? I need my old system running again. The ssd can wait. I got other problems right now.......
If you answer please consider explaining it step by step and very easy to understand. Im not a pro and english is not my native tongue.

Oliver,
I am afraid there is no simple fix for your problem. And this problem is not about ATI any longer, but about your Windows installation.
From what you say, it looks like multiple registry settings have been changed or corrupted in Windows. Since Windows registry is dynamic, I don't think there is a wholesale fix and you probably lost some coherence.
I would bet that the problem extends to other applications.
If I were in your shoes, I would reinstall Windows and the application on a blank disk. Is this something you could do? Do you have the Windows installation DVDs? Can you reinstall the programs you have?
