No backup of laptop

Thread needs solution

I have just bought ATI2010 and run on one desktop.

Trying to make a backup of my laptop (XP PRO SP3 FAT32) failed completely.
I got "The parameter is incorrect (0xFFF0)
" See the complete log file below.

What is wrong? What to do?

The computer is correct, other backup software works fine.

I ask for the free support, which is promised here.

I had a similar issue with 3 different laptops. It seems Acronis does not do a good job with resolving a conflict with those 'recovery partitions' which sit on local C:\ and which are part of the factory image. I was actually browsing A again to see if they made any progress, as I bought another laptop HP8540p which did not have any imaging software...

Hello,

liberty, let me assist you.

First of all, please make sure that you have the most recent build #7046 that we've released recently. If the issue still persists with the latest build I may recommend you to do the following:

  1. Gather AcronisInfo tool output;
  2. Submit a support request with the collected information or use Live Chat.

Andrew, could you please clarify: what version of Acronis software you use?

What exactly did you try to back up?

Could you please attach the log file with the error to your reply to this thread?

We are looking forward to hearing back from you at your earliest convenience.

Thank you.

Hi again,

I have still problems with my laptop with the buid 7046.
One full and one incremental have succeeded.

Several backups as well as validations have failed.

I have now made a support case of it and I am now waiting for proposals to solve this.

I hope this rather trivial backup case could be solved soon.
I have never had such problems with a backup software before.

Thank you for your assistance

liberty,
By any chance are you using a wireless mouse? There have been recent posting about wireless mouse interfering with validation of archives.

Just to be caution, I would also check the drive for any disk errors. It may run for hours.

From the command prompt:
Chkdsk c: /r

Memory chip issues have been known to prevent validation.
Item 27 inside my signature index below is a reference. Let the memory test run all night.

GroverH,

this has been done several times.
The error in the logfile has also been reproduced.

Thank you.

Hello,
Ilya,

I have now sent a message to you with the infofile attached.
I hope you can help me with this problem.

Thanks

Hello liberty,

I've received the information, analyzed it and replied you via PM.

Thank you very much for the provided AcronisInfo.

Hi Ilya,

thank you for doing something about my problem.

I hope you could find a way to solve my problem - to backup a laptop should be easy.
I have made several file backups before without any problems.
The laptop which I use at very special occasions has been working fine.
I have never made any chkdsk /r on it before, now I have been obliged to do many, without any result of value

The Acronis software seems to be very unstable to me. The file communication seems to be a weak point.

I look forward to get support from you on this issue, otherwise I have to leave Acronis.

Hi again,

still no response to my problems. The email support has been silent for a week.

I tried a file backup of the laptop.
The backup gave no error. But the validation gave an empty error:
Error:
Can anyone explain??
See the log.

Hello Ilya,

I did

1. sent the acronisinfo to you, did I not?
2. make a support case but did not get any meaningful answer until now.
I have got two replies after waiting a week for each
If they ask for a new tool output I will of course do that. But could you not send them the one I sent to you??
3. try the chat but they just told me to reinstall the program
4. ask you to see to it that a good support person will take care of my case. What is the result of this?

I send you this message because you have directed my to this forum in a PM.

Thank you

Liberty,

Is this a manual or a scheduled task?

Are you trying to make a complete disk image or system image or files and folder backup?

Do you have any other utilities running that might be preventing disk or memory access?

How much RAM (physical and free) does your laptop have and how big is your pagefile?

Did chkdsk require you to reboot in order for it to run?

Have you tried running memtest86 (free download from memtest), this needs to be run for at least 6 hours and preferably for more than 12. TI tends to test RAM to it's limits, other programs may work fine, but TI can fail with the slightest RAM error.

Is this a company laptop that might have some group policies enacted on it?

If you have made a rescue CD, does TI work from the Linux environment?

Have you tried uninstalling TI, Shutdown, Reboot, re-install?

So far I have run backup manually, both image and file backup.

I have 2 GB RAM. I have run chkdsk from reboot as I have FAT32. Nothing special.
Just a simple personal laptop with no utilities used for outside the office work.
The TI is very unstable with very different backup times.
I have had fast backups that have succeeded but slower (say 6 times) that have failed.

The validation takes normally a very long time, several times longer than a succeded backup.
And validation seems only to use the backup file, not the source hard disk.

For me the network communication seems to be a very week point in TI - I have compared with other backup software, that has succeeded.
As the result of the stops/successes varies wildly I do not think the problem should be because of the hard disk.

The above log was from validation of a file backup with no error.
The error log attched here have appeared several times. This was from an image backup that reached the end of the backup with a result available,
with a size quite similar to a previous succeeded one. Can you explain the error? Chunk bitmap inconsistent?

As seen I have so far not got much help from Acronis. Just to reinstall and run chkdsk, he he.

It seems to me that a lot people here have problems with the network communication.
Backup on my local PC works fine without any error so far..

Thank you.

When you ran chkdsk, did you use the /r switch? If not, it'd be a good idea to do so.

Validation will take longer than making the image, and yes it does it by checking the checksums in the image not by comparing with the source.

I find the support very bad.

After 6 weeks the situation is the same.

I TODAY received a message that I should run chkdsk, which I have run several times from the beginning.

Since the beginning of this procedure and the support:

1. About 20 messages back and forth have been exchanged without any progress.
2. 4 different people from support have sent messages to me without any coordination
3. I have provided acronis with a lot of work and information.
4. 2 info.zip files have been sent without any feedback
5 I have run the PCAP test without any reaction from the support
6. I have provided acronis with times for backup, validation etc with no response
7. Finally today I have been asked to run chkdsk /r - ??

Have you had similar experience with the software and the support?

I wonder if acronis true image can be used to take backup images over a home network?

Question

I was asked by support to use the backup options to limit the network speed to 1000 kB/s even if I have a 1000/100 Mb network.

I put the limit to 1000 kB/s but after checking later the limit was changed by the program to 2kB/s and the backkup seemed to be very slow.
Any idea about this astonishing thing?

- I have asked the support about this, but so far. after some weeks, no reply. -

Liberty,

I see in my post (#18) I mentioned using chkdsk /r as did GroverH earlier on and I'm still unsure if you've run checkdisk with this switch or does your question mark mean you need to know how to do this?

It doesn't matter what speed any network device is set to, if it has transmission difficulties for whatever reason it will autonegotiate to a slower speed and /or in the case of TI eventually timeout. In fact this is the first time (I believe) that this task is being imaged via a network.
Have you tried making an image to either an internal drive/partition or a USB/Firewire attached drive, if you have do you still get the same error message?

1. Run chkdsk /r

2. Check network cable connection.

3. Check state of cable.

4. Check what else might be creating traffic on the network.

5. If the network is attached to a router, ping the router for transmissions times - perhaps move cable to a different port.

6. If drive is attached to a router - network drive directly (if possible) and see if problem still exists.

Thank you Colin very much.

I give some comments.

A. I have run chkdsk /r several times.
I have sent several info files to support but without any meaningful response.

I still do not understand the error messages received in the log files (see also above)
No explanations received from support.

B. My network works fine.

C. I find the network communication software used by TI unstable and a cause to my problem.

D. I have had a mixture of successful and failed backups. The same for validations.
Backup to a USB memory works better,

E. I was asked by support to use the network speed option and then found that the input value was changed (surprisingly) by the TI program to 5 kB/s. The backup could then not be fulfilled with such increduble low speed. - I have also seen an error message that such a low value was not acceptable by TI. -

I have therefore asked why and when this setting to 5 kB/s could happen.

Have you seen it yourself?

F. Do you mean that an image backup of a laptop has never before been made to a PC over a home network?

Sincerely,
