No or partially response from Acronis main page after a backup is done.
Regarding: Acronis True Image Home 11 build 6868 + Pluspack.
I have a C and a D drive, that contains system files.
It is a dual boot system, wher C is the XP system abd D has the Win7 system.
(reason is that I have harware that is not Win7 compatible, and need to use it)
So I am trying to backup my two systems so that I can restore them after a crash.
My data is on a four 1 TByte disks in RAID1 and is not yet allowed into this backup system,
Reason for that is that I have found that Acroonis is not really yet finished with their product.
At all. Backup may work. I cannot tell that, but user interface is so buggy and complex, that one wonder how many progammers it was creting all this mess =)
Now. To take the most serious example:
After a Single backup on an empty partition for my CDRIVE...Acronis main page is not responding.
Some links are working. Like "On Line Backup" (!) and "Disk and Partition backup", AND this deteriorating. I have it on now in the background, and it is not responsive at all.
No backup operations is on. Backup seem to be done, the .tib file is there.
But now I want to change backup mode on this to "Custom/Differential/3 versions" and clean up on.
NO WAY JOSÉ!!!
So I try to contact Acronis? Sorry...no help...you bought this for 2 months ago... Long nose!!!
I am so very grateful. Thanks!
Any help at all on this forum?
Best regards,
Lars Ahlstrom
More bugs I have tried to communicate;
* Will not work in multimonitor environment. Looses X/Y coordianates.
* "Not enough space" on disks that is BIG.
* Incremental and differential looks to be the same. No explanation on how and why it differs.
* No help after purchasing? Why purchase it? Only for two months???
* Thers more, I am just sp frustrated right now, that I have forgot all the details of what I have found. I might add to this thread, if it will not be erased.

Lars,
Could you edit your first post and transfer it to the True Image Home forum, as more people will see it there.
The 'not enough space' problem, is this after or during a consolidation of an archive?
Incremental and differentials should look different but this might depend on how you ahve the tasks set up.
I have two monitor setup, what problems do you have with the multi monitors?
If you don't use OLB, try disabling the CDP service in Services.msc . The 'hanging' might be due to the NSB or OLB service or when 2011 updates or interrogates it's database.
It should be able to work with your RAID setup, what doesn't it do?

Colin,
Thanks for givning me time and trying to help me.
Since that post, I have found that a backup drive has to be att least 3 times the tib file of the first backup.
So I have rearranged, and stole a little here and a little there from my partitions on this drive. I hope this will work now.
I found out how the "not enough space" works...it is trial and error, I cannot find it in any manual.
Incremental and differential is a mystery for me. I miss the exact desription.
In my left monitor nothing works, except that I can manage to grab the window and drag it back to the right monitor.
It is like the x/y coordinates is wrong, I click on something and something else within a couple of inches away is responding.
What is OLB, CDP, NSB and where is the Services.msc? I am not a programmer...I am a simple lousy customer ;)
My RAID system is backed up under control of a copying program. No compression no cryptation, just plain copying.
I just want to have my data safe backed up in original version. I COULD use Acronis, but after 3 months I still is confused by all thes flaws, and I am going to test it as soon it is start working with no problems and feel I can trustit. Now I have 3 backups on my boot disks, and hope at least on works if I get a disk crash ;)
/Lars
System looks like this:
1 of 300 Gbyte drive: C: (XP system and dualboot.)
2 of 1 Tbyte drives in RAID: D: Win7 system 195,31 GByte AND E: Media (Data) 1667,71 GB
1 of 2 Terabyte drive: G: DDRIVE Backup: 141 Gb Q: CDRIVE backup: 205 Gb H: EMEDIA backup: 1510 Gb
E: is copied with Bestsync Premium to H:
The tibs are: CDRIVE Backup 33gb DRIVE Backup 66gb
C & D is also backed up on a 750gb external USB drive by Acronis software.
On E 1300gb is used and 500 is free.
I cannot find a way to just copy what is changed on ONE tibfile. Always at least one extra tib-file there has to be room for.

Tried to backup from scratch, after rearranging partitions.
Prgram refused, unless I creted "My backups" folder manually.
Then it backed up, but ended with: "The last backup has failed. View log"
So I view log:
Two last iems in the log:
X Failed to open datastream. Error code: 0x000B03E9+0x00040011+0x0000FFF0+0x80070002
X Operation has completed with errors.
"Acronis error code handling: We are sorry.
There is no information about this error available now. You can use the links below to search for any additional information that might be available."
What is this?

Lars,
Try uninstalling 2011, rebooting and reinstalling. Set up fresh new tasks. This process solves many Failed to Open datastream errors.

Lars,
Just recalled there is a 'bug' in the default free space setting for images, it defaults to a ridiculously large size. Check the size it is set at and reduce it down to something more sensible. TIH should only need about 40-60% of the used space of the drive you are imaging (full backup) free on the storage drive. Consolidation however requires at least the amount of the size of the archives being consolidated free to work, as it recreates each indiviudal part of an archive as it consolidates and deletes as per the tasks criteria.

I rebooted, deleted the DDRIVE Backup and made a CDRIVE Backup Clone from the DDRIVE Backup settings, and just changed the "source location" and "destination location" (good names to use...) and NAME of the backup.
...and backed C up.
And exploring the DDDRIVE backup
1. first gave me a view of the CDRIVES backup, using "explore backup"... Closed that.
2. restarded program "Acronis..." ( I have learn to be that clecer now)
3. Now when exploring the DDRIVE I get this endless "accessing location" that cannot be killed unless I close the application "Acronis..."
I have it trying to Accessing now while I write. I wonder what it is accessing. Any idea?

Okay,
I have not reinstalled the program.
It seem to live its own life, but now it is calmer...
I have rearranged the backups, like this:
On a 750 gB USB MyBook, I have 700 for a sector by sector image of drive C & D.
50 gB on that is partitioned for Outlook and smaller backups.
My 2 Tbyte drive has a 250gB partition for an normal two disk backup of c & d (no sector by sector)
The rest if that drive is media backup for artwork, handled by another program, that is rock solid (bestsync)
I am now curious how Acronis application handles my User folder...
It is not backung up all files in it, and question is if this is going to work on a Recover operation.
It is not backing up files that are locked or hidden it seems.
Anyone have an idéa of that?

double click copy of post, as the office backup hanged.... :-(
It worked...it is just that I wrote this on left monitor, and Acronis do not update the right monitor, when it id busy with backups.
It may be so that it wont update the window unless it is active.
I guess I have to live with that.

It certainly won't back up files that are locked in a files and folders backup, and whilst I'm not so sue what it is supposed to do as far as hidden files are concerned, I can see why it might not.
It should image all those files though in a disk or partition image backup.

Colin B wrote:It certainly won't back up files that are locked in a files and folders backup
Oh REALLY? I've only been recently testing file backup and this is definitely a deal killer for me. I haven't received errors, but haven't checked logs either. There are other file backup solutions which WILL back up locked files.
- Se connecter pour poster des commentaires
Well I'll check again, but I'm pretty sure it didn't for me.
- Se connecter pour poster des commentaires
I checked the logs for the past week through the ATI interface and no "locked file" type errors - so unless more exhaustive logs exist elsewhere either 1) ATI isn't telling us when it doesn't copy a locked file; 2) I have been lucky enough not to have any locked files so far; or 3) ATI is actually copying locked files.

Interesting discussion. I can quote the BestSync program:
"Support Volume Shadow Copy Service to copy/backup locked files, open files and databases, including Outlook files, Quicken, etc. Limited to Windows XP and Windows Server 2003/Windows VISTA."
and...
"Volume Shadow Copy Service (VSS)
The Volume Shadow Copy Service (VSS) captures and copies stable images for backup on running systems, particularly servers, without unduly degrading the performance and stability of the services they provide. VSS has following main merits:
VSS provides fast volume capture of the state of a disk at one instant in time, i.e a shadow copy of the volume. This volume copy exists side by side with the live volume, and contains copies of all files on disk effectively saved and available as a separate device.
VSS minimize application downtime. The VSS shadow copy exists in parallel with a live copy of the volume to be backed up, so except for the brief period of the shadow copy's preparation and creation, an application can continue its work. The time needed to actually create a shadow copy, which occurs between Freeze and Thaw events, typically takes about one minute. While a writer's preparation for a shadow copy, including flushing I/O and saving state (see Overview of Pre-Backup Tasks), may be nontrivial, it is significantly shorter than the time required to actually back up a volume-which for large volumes may take hours. "
And a question for Colin B: How do I make a true "Disk Image Backup" to save and use if computer crasches?

How can i delete these post doubles... =)

Lars,
BTW, you don't need to do a sector-by-sector backup when you set up a disk and partition backup, and you certainly don't need it if you also have a regular disk and partition backup without the sector by sector.
IT is a good idea to diversify your backup locations, as you are doing, though.

Lars,
The business versions (ABR11 etc) do support various types of VSS (MS VSS, Hardware VSS, Acronis VSS all user selectable), I don't think the Home version does, but I might be wrong.
Instead of selecting the tab marked files and folders, select the one marked disks and partitions.
- Se connecter pour poster des commentaires
Tab marked folders? Hmm.. where?
So as I understand it...I have purchased an Image saving program that does not save a full true image of all files with no exceptions.
That means that "true" is false, "image" is false, "home" is safe, and Acronis is the company.... Silly me...
Now I get an email where I can free ugrade my program to 2011.
Opps, sorry....just the guys that have purchased July 27 to August 27........
Us OLDIES htat have about a month experience how to set this up, have to pay another 30 dosh to PROBABLY still not saving a True Image.
Does I sound annoyed? That is probably because I am. I feel totally bluffed into this Imaging business. Imagine that! ;)
Good luck with this, guys... I guess there are bertter alternatives fo programming companies that really wants to evolve.
Best regards,
Lars

Lars,
A "full true image" is a partition or disk based image, as I understand your post you are using the files and folders backup choice, this is patently different to a complete disk image, so there will be differences.
Sorry, ignore my reference to tabs, for some strange reason I suddenly thought you were using 2012 not 2011, however the imaging comment is valid for 2011 of course.
- Se connecter pour poster des commentaires
Nah, I use "Disk backup"...
Is that a true disk image then? Rebootable and no files missing?
If so I kindly redraw my annoyed comment above...
But it is still anoying to fight so many bugs, and when the fighting is over, all workarounds cleared out, they release another $30 upgrade.
Just after a month... as I also had to buy the pluspack as well in the middle of the beaf... It required me to have dynamic disks all of a sudden.

Lars,
If you did a disk backup and you included all the partitions that are on your system disk, you will be able to restore your system to a new disk if, for example, your disk completely fails.
A disk backup has default exclusions (.TIB, .~ and .tmp, if I am correct), but you can modify these exclusions.
Otherwise, there is no way a file would not be included, except that pagefile.sys and hiberfil.sys are replaced with placeholders files in the backup (they are not really backed up, a placeholder file of the same size is placed in the archive).

Yes I did a backup on my partition called D: and combined with that a C: disk backup.
My system starts on C: asks if I want XP or Win7 and If Win7 it boots on D:
Acronis application told me to backup C: as well as D: as they are both involved in my boot system.
So I guess that means I am protected. I have the same backup on USB disk.
What I miss in the manual, is something about the space required in normal reference cases.
I started this Acronis project and saw that program compressed rather well, but I always had "no space available" until I realized that this space is needed later, as new versions would be added. So a lot of time went to rearranging partitions so that everything had speace enough.
Like my C drive has in real life 300 Gbyte and D: has 200Gbyte.
The backup disk has 118Gbyte tib file and a diff file of 206 Mbyte (C and D) (half capacity used on 234 Gbyte disk)
The USB has a 307gb tib file, and a 2.2Gbyte diff file as it is backed up sector by sector. (about half on 750Gbyte USB disk)
I guess I am secure now? =)
Because this has taken so long to get to work, I think I am allowed an free upgrade. Dont you think? =)
Thanks for all help, btw! Without your good hints, I still hadnt made it yet...

Remember you don't need to turn on the sector by sector feature of the backup. Many users think this is a better way, close to a clone, to do backup. In fact this feature has nothing to do with the way the backup is done. It just backs up all free and unallocated space on the disk, none of which is useful in a regular backup. if one day your disk is about dead and you have one last operation you can do, you can do a sector by sector backup so that you can do some "forensic" recovery afterwards without the physical support.
