Nonstop backup and computer sleep issues

When nonstop backup 2013 is running, computer won't sleep (for days....) although it appears backup is completed. When I kill nonstop from the tray it sleeps fine. During the nonsleep time no other "work" is being done, i.e. the PC is "home alone". The machine is a Win 7 64bit OS using a WD MyBookLive NAS for the backup loation. Any fixes/workarounds known?

If you don't need the computer to wake from sleep by monitoring the NIC (remote wake up using magic packets) you can try disabling the feature to "wake" the computer using the NIC in the device power management settings for your NIC.

Sometimes a driver update for the NIC can correct this issue.

I'm not sure either of these suggestions will help.

After the backup is completed, run an elevated command prompt and type powercfg -requests
See which process keeps the computer awake.

Ron,

It looks like NSB is in the process of consolidating the slices it has created since so many slices are accessed. That would be part of the normal processing of NSB. If you leave the computer on for a couple of days, does the problem go away?
As you do that, unhide hidden files, navigate to the NSB destination, observe the CDP files in the Time Explorere Storage. Do they look like they are actually being consolidated?

Not sure it's in the process of consolidation. The computer has not slept since I started using NSB before Christmas, including the week we were away on vacation. I've attached a dir listing of Time Explorer Storage. Not sure what to make of it.

You are right, it is not in the process of consolidation. In fact, the large number of CDP files is coming from the fact that your NAS formatting forces ATI to split the CDP data in 1GB chunks.
Did you map the NAS share to a local drive or folder? V:\? and then pointed ATI to that mapped drive?
Or did you create the connection to the NAS in ATI and then used that to indicate the target location?

The cdp files are approximately 1GB by design. Can you post the NSB exclusion list? It will probably need to be a screen shot, unless you can find where the exclusions are stored. If you do find where the exclusions are stored, I would appreciate finding out where it is.

I don't know if it will make a difference, but my exclusions are different (see attached screen shots). I don't recall making the first 4 entries. I did make the fifth entry for other issues I have encountered with NSB. I have not tried to reset the exclusions to their defaults.

Can you try running Windows resource monitor and have a look at what files are being written to the local disk that might be actively being added to the cdpxxx.data files?

I noticed that my exclusion list includes the path:

c:\windows\prefetch

You might see if you have included it when you updated your exclusion list. Here's what it's for:

The resourcemonitor.png file you attached seems to be accessing it. As I indicated earlier, I don't remember adding adding it, and based upon Microsoft's explanation, there doesn't appear to be any harm in excluding it.

Edit:

I'm also not seeing any activity in your post of the NSB driver afcdpsrv.exe, or activity on your NAS drive. Not entirely sure what to make of it at the moment. Is your NAS drived mapped to your E: drive?

I thought I had added the prefetch to the exclusion list last go 'round, but went into True Image to confirm. Oddly, none of my exclusions are there >:-|

I modified the list while NSB was running. Don't know if that would explain it. No time tonight, but tomorrow I'll shut NSB down and add them again.

If you did indeed save the exclusion list and subsequent action was required such as stopping and starting NSB, I would have expected the software to have told you that. Also, if you indeed did save the settings and they did not show up when you checked back, I would recommend this be reported as a bug.

Attempted to re-add the exclusions tonight, however each time I try to save out of the Settings dialog after adding any exclusions I get the attached error. Even tried just adding a single exclusion from a fresh boot. In all cases NSB was not active.

I've noticed TIH behaves badly when Window updates are pending, even if they have yet to be installed. My NSB just stopped, and the log file reports an I/O error, which I understand to be a known bug. If I try to edit my exclusion list (NSB is stopped due to the I/O error), the GUI just hangs and I have to terminate the task.

I've restarted the NSB task and I'm waiting for it finish its "Preparing to back up" status.

You might try starting the NSB service and wait for it to finish updating the cdpxxx.data files before editing the exclusions. Many of my cdpxxx.data files were updated today. I suspect it might have to do with the Windows update.

I normally let Windows download its updates, but have it prompt me to install them. I've observed the pending Windows update misbehavior a number of times, but the failure mechanisms manifest themselves in scheduled backups also, not just NSB. The worst part of it is that the log file often erroneously reports success in its summary line, while the detail lines show that failures have actually occurred. I have also reported this bug.

Unfortunately, Acronis has made no commitment to fix these issues, nor given a time frame to resolve them.

Update:

I'm now unable to open the exclusion settings.  It appears that TIH is waiting for another of its tasks (screen shot attached).

Hmm. Interesting. I've not seen a dialog like that. In fact I don't see any errors until I try to save the revised settings. The exclusions list comes up blank. I re-add exclusions, click (OK), click (Save) on the Settings dialog, then I get that error I sent.

I notice today there's a (Reset to Initial Settings) on the exclusions dialog. Tomorrow I'll try clicking that before adding exclusions - see if that clears it up.

I think my issues came from the fact that during updates, one of the exclusion paths was no longer valid (it was deleted by an update to my antivirus software, which was occurred at the same time Windows updates were installed).

I finally got the exclusions to appear (after hours of experimenting, with little recollection of all of the steps I took), and deleted the non-existent path. I tried to recover a file as a test, but it just got stuck. I found that there was a Windows update still pending, so I installed it and restarted. Trying to recover a test file after that just sat there with no progress indication, other than "calculating" for an hour or so.

It took a while for NSB to sort itself out, and once it appeared to have done that, I was able to restore a test file.

Unfortunately, there was no indication from TIH what was happening throughout the whole process. I had to monitor the bowels of the system and deduce for myself what might be happening.

OK. Here's where we're at: Uninstalled TIH. Restarted. Ran Norton Utilities and cleaned the registry. Reinstalled TIH. Re-configured NSB, but rather than using the exclusions list, explicitly excluded the unwanted directories in the backup config. Saving the backup generated the same event code. :-(

Case #01852621 .

According to Acronis, NSB and sleep are fundamentally incompatible: "If you have Non-stop Backup running and the machine will not go to sleep as Non-Stop Backup takes place every five minutes and the process keeps running. If you want that the machine should go to sleep then you may run only Disk backup scheduled to run at a particular time only."

Does that jive with experience out there in the community?

The case is still open while they investigate my inability to save any config changes to an NSB task.

Can you tell me where you located the backup config file? The config.xml file in my TIH Time Explorer Directory does not contain my exclusions. If found this to be true on two different machines. One is running W7 premium home edition and the other is (unfortunately) running Vista.

I have never heard this, and I do not believe it is correct. I do know that if I manually put my machines into sleep mode, I Usually don't have problems. I have encountered errors, but Acronis acknowledged that they are due to bugs in the driver. Windows is not reporting any errors associated with those that the NSB driver is reporting.

I don't recall ever being given a choice as to where to store config. I did notice a config.xml in the Time Explorer directory on the NAS, but it was essentially empty. Contained the name of my backup job and little else.

Update: My case was escalated to Expert Support. Thus far they've come back with the following:

"The task settings issue, according to the logs, is caused by inability to access the backup location. You may check the article in Microsoft's Knowledge base describing this limitation: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/938120

The error message that True Image logged comes directly from the OS, and it reads like "Multiple connections to a server or shared resource by the same user, using more than one user name, are not allowed. Disconnect all previous connections to the server or shared resource and try again".

In order to overcome this particular error, I suggest trying to use the same credentials in True Image to access the NAS share as the credentials used to mount this share as a network drive (username "WOPR-II\Ron" in exactly same form). Alternatively, you may try using an IP-address to point to the NAS. Windows will consider this a different share, and such error should not appear."

I noticed I have a drive mapping to the NAS I didn't recall setting up, which likely used the conflicting credentials. Deleted that, and also set up NSB using (static) IP for the NAS rather than the network name. Now I can successfully modify NSB Options. Sleep issue persists and they continue to investigate.

The response from expert support on the sleep issue:

"I checked it with our QA and development and this is indeed the expected behavior for the Nonstop Backup functionality (as currently designed and implemented). Let me share the information I received from our product managers.

Nonstop Backup is designed to run in a way that ensures continuous data protection, so it has to perform regular checks of the data in the backup scope (as well as polling the backup location to ensure that sufficient space is available); and when no changes are detected naturally no backup modification follows. However True Image software has no means of telling whether there were just no modifications to the protected files or if this happened due to machine being not in use (hence no changes are expected, even though some programs may keep operating autonomously).

The current feature design presupposes that you would need to pause the Nonstop Backup task, so it does not prevent automatic sleep. E.g. if you finish your work and don't want to shut the machine down, but would like to have it go to the sleep mode automatically you would simply need to pause/exit Nonstop Backup (e.g. from tray).

However, the product managers have taken your feedback into consideration and we have created an internal feature request for the future versions of True Image. Our development team will look into the possibilities of including additional options to account for this scenario, but since it requires significant architecture and kernel driver changes (which is always very risky) for the current release this behavior will remain the same, and the manual Nonstop Backup pause should be used.

Should you experience any issues after pausing the Nonstop Backup (though I don't expect any), do not hesitate to contact us, we will launch a full-scale investigation of the problem."

I have to disagree. My Windows Vista machine is running NSB, and goes into sleep mode after 1 hour of inactivity, as I set in the power management configuration.

I have attached two screen shots of the afcdpsrv log file from my W7 machine. I normally manually put it into sleep mode. As the screen shots show, the NSB driver wakes the machine and then puts puts it back into hibernation mode after completing its tasks.

I haven't tried letting my W7 machine go into hibernation on its own yet, but when I get a chance, I'll try that and post what happens.

Update to my post #33. My W7 machine went into hibernation as set in the power options. I did not have to pause NSB.

I woke my Windows Vista machine from hibernation and NSB continued okay. I did not pause NSB in order for it to hibernate.

I'm not sure what to make of comment #32.

Both of my backups are on external USB drives. I believe a key issue what is listed via powercfg /requests command. My W7 machine lists:

I believe the USB Audio Device shown may prevent that machine from automatically entering sleep mode, and I'm in the process identifying if that's the case. That machine did sleep, but I probably shut off the USB speakers before calling it a night.

I think it's the network backup target that makes the difference for me, though admittedly, Acronis didn't call that out as a differentiator in their response. My powercfg output lists tons of files open across the network.
