Novice Question about Differential backups. Would like to maintain original and delete some of the early files

Thread needs solution

My understanding of differential backups is that the original file is the master and each differential is the files that are different from the original backup. Once at 8 or 10 backups why keep 2-8 or even 9 when the files that are different from day 1 are all in the latest with the unchanged in the fist backup. I understand the files need to be removed from within the software.

How would I go about this or should I be creating a new every 5 or ten and start fresh? The differential files can get up to 700GB or more.

You could set up a NEW task such as this GH-13 example creating a new full and new diff files .
Using this method and my example, the program will do its own cleanup of older chains.
Or, if your backups are daily, you could set the number of diff to more or change the number of chains to keep.
This maintenace would be automatic without your interceding.

GH13. Create Custom Differential Backup Scheme. 2 Diff, Keep 2 chains. The 2-2 is an example only with user choice for whatever number of chains to be retained best fits the individual needs.

Unfortunately, the program does not provide for deletion of just the older dif files.
2015 does not provide a deletion method so any user deletion of just the diff files would need to be manual
via the Windows Explorer delete option.
If you do perform any manual deletes, be sure and then return to the TI program
and click on the Recovery option (maybe then press ignore, if prompted) and pressing the Recover/ignore button
should update the program.

You can try this manual deletion of older dif files on your current backup if you plan to delete them anyway.
