Old hard drive issues, can't see new hard drive after failed cloning
Hello so I recently bought a WD 2TB hard drive and I attempted to clone my samsung 1TB hard drive to the new 2TB one using the Acronis true image Western Digital version (free with any WD product).
After the cloning process started my computer restarted and it gave me a screen showing my progress with my cloning, I was about 40% of the way in step 2 out of 3 (I think that step was called "Cloning to new drive"?) and then all of the sudden my computer restarted, but this time Windows booted up.
I noticed it took windows an extra minute or two to boot up so I did a system recovery back to before I installed Acronis (15 mins before I attempted cloning), yet every time I restart/boot up windows it still takes longer to boot up.
I managed to install Acronis (which requires a WD product) but when I tried to launch Acronis it said "You must have a WD product to launch this application". So I thought huh, w/e I'll just backup my iTunes and Steam games and then I'll just do a fresh install of windows 7 on my new 2TB hard drive. So after backing up my iTunes to my external hard drive (it was still plugged in) I decided to try to launch Acronis again... and it worked! But then I realized it was simply because my external hard drive happened to be WD, but I clicked on clone drive anyway to see what options I had. I saw my old 1TB hard drive and my external hard drive as options for both source and destination but I didn't see my 2TB hard drive there!.
I quickly checked my device manager and it did confirm that my 2TB hard drive was there and that the drivers were up to date but then I checked disk management... It popped up saying that my hard drive would fail and that I need to backup my data now so I started backing it up to my external drive. While I was backing it up I went to the disk management and saw that while it showed my 2TB hard drive as there and unallocated it didn't give me any option to make a new partition on it!
I downloaded HDD Scan and scanned my old 1 TB and said everything was ok but with my brand new 2 TB hard drive it showed a red X next to Reallocation Sector Count (and it was the worst value it could possibly be) and a yellow exclamation mark next to Reallocation Event Count (and that was the worst value it could be too)
I searched in control panel for disk repair and then it said Windows explorer has stopped working (not internet explorer)!
Please help I'm pretty sure the cloning must have damaged my new 2TB hard drive and possibly my old 1TB hard drive is there any solution or am I SOL?

Dennis,
Now that you have ATI, you should not clone. Do a disk and partition backup of your 1TB disk and restore on the 2TB. Do everything using the recovery CD. Do not reboot the computer with both disks inside: backup the old disk, remove it, put the new one in, boot on the recoveyr CD, restore.
For further details on how to backup and restore, check these guides out: http://forum.acronis.com/forum/29618

Dumb question, what's ATI? Also what about the HDD Scan results? Do you think my 2TB HDD could have been damaged by the failed clone?
More info: My 2TB hdd only cloned partially. The software was a download so I don't have a CD or any recovery CD that I know of... I think...

Dennis,
You can either download the recovery media from your Acronis account (assuming you've registered your 2012 serial number) or make a recoverable CD via the WD TIH or TIH 2012 media builder option. For 2012 the media builder is on the tools and utilities tab and is also a separate entry in the Windows Acronis folder.
ATI = Acronis True Image :)
TIH = True Image Home,
Both abbreviations are synonomous with each other. True Image used to be known prior to 2010 as ATI, with 2010 the name was changed to Home to differentiate it from the corporate products.

Dennis,
A failed cloned process doesn't damage any disk physically but it sure can lead to data loss and corruption of the file system.
When you use the recovery CD, be aware that it shows you drive letters different than what Windows shows you. Pay extra attention to disk labels (not drive letters), brand, size to verify that you choose the right source and the right destination.
Many users end up cloning an empty drive on their original drive and lose everything because of the possible confusion with these drive letters.

When you say corruption of the file system is there a way to fix that?
I loaded up the acronis true image WD edition via CD and it says my 2TB HDD is there :D but it says it's unallocated somehow.
In order to backup my old HDD I'll need 810 GB and my external drive only has like 200 gb left on it (out of 750 so it doesn't even matter if I delete stuff) so I've decided I'm going to install a fresh copy of windows on my new 2TB HDD and move a couple files I want (iTunes and Steam) via the external hdd.
So in order to install a fresh copy of windows 7 do I need to set up a partition first? BTW I'm preforming the disk clean on my 2TB drive as we speak, it's on step 1 of 2 Wiping partition and the bar isn't moving.
Sorry if I sound like an idiot, I've upgraded many computer parts before and I can OC my ram and cpu, flash the BIOS on my videocard but when it comes to transferring data to a new HDD I have no idea what to do lol.

Dennis,
Is your 810GB figure based on your used space? An image normally compresses the drive size by a factor of approximately 30.
The clone should work whether the drive is formatted or not. As you now have a recovery CD you could try a reverse clone which is putting the new drive into your PC and the old drive into your external caddy, boot from the CD and clone from the caddy to the internal drive.
In answer to your final question the drive does not need to be partitioned, the Windows 7 installer will run DiskPart and automatically format and allocate one partition covering the whole drive. If you don't want what will be come your C: partition to take up the complete drive space, then you would need to partition the drive before installing W7, though that can be done from within the W7 installer or alternatively afterwards if you have a disk resizing utility.

right sorry, yeah i miss read that and i guess it will be less than 810 gigs, however i still am going to do a fresh install, thanks for your help guys but one last question should the S.M.A.R.T. scan results from HDDscan give me any worries?

What are your SMART results?
SMART is supposed to provide indicators of the health of the drive...

HDDscan can give inaccurate results, you should always test with and interpret SMART results with more than one SMART analyzer.

I uploaded a picture showing what came up (these S.M.A.R.T. scans are on my new 2TB HDD).
I ran HDDScan, diskcheckup, and activesmart S.M.A.R.T. scans and they all came up with fail on Reallocated sector count with value 41 worst 41 threshold 140 and raw value of 1265 if the picture isn't working.
Also in the picture you can see the warning activesmart gave me saying "Drive failure Imminent" Also I'll note that the "Drive cleansing" on Acronis didn't work, for 45 mins the progress bar didn't move at all and I just gave up
Could it also be possible that I just had a faulty drive shipped to me?

This indicates that the drive firmware has detected some bad sectors in the past. It doesn't mean that the drive is failing.
The drive could be failing if that number continue increasing.
A tool like Acronis Drive Monitor (free) allows you to "reset" the number so it is easier to see if it increases later.
Run chkdsk X: /r on all "X" partitions of your drive, from an elevated command prompt.
Continue monitoring the situation.

Ok thanks, last last question (I promise (kinda)) is my new 2TB drive all 100% fine and dandy? If not is there a way to restore the "corruption of the file system" or whatever else that might have happened to the drive?
- Se connecter pour poster des commentaires
The corruption was probably caused when the clone wiped the drive and found a sector that wasn't as expected and spat the dummy.
The only way of knowing if your drive has a problem is to connect it and use either Acronis Drive Monitor as suggested by Pat or the equally free Hard Disk Sentinel. Make a note of the number that is shown and then check over the next couple of days to see if it changes. If it increases then yes the drive probably has a fault, if there is no change then the drive can be considered OK.
Obviously take into account any warranty and money back/exchange your vendor may have in making a decision.

Ok thanks guys for the advice, after monitoring my 2TB HDD I've noticed that sometimes it doesn't appear on HDscan or any other of the 5 SMART scan programs I have (including Acronis Drive Monitor). When it does appear it shows the same values so I think physically it's ok but still shouldn't I be able to see the HDD on the scans 100% of the time?

Does it still appear in Windows Management or a disk utility such as Diskpart?
To run diskpart you have to have a command window open with administrator permissions - type in diskpart then list disk

In device manager it's not there and in diskpart I only see my current 1 TB HDD.
Any idea on what this entails?

Dennis,
After reading this thread again, I think you may have serious problems with this drive. Have you downloaded the Western Digital Windows Diagnostic package WinDLG from the WD website http://support.wdc.com/product/download.asp?groupid=608&sid=3&lang=en and run it yet?
You can also download a bootable CD image that can be burned onto a CD to be run at boot time instead of Windows, to bypass any Windows issues that may be present. http://support.wdc.com/product/download.asp?groupid=608&sid=30&lang=en. I would suggest you try both. Also double check that you have power and data cables correctly attached to the new drive. You should be able to see the drive both in Windows Disk Management, as well as the diskpart command line utility. Can you return it and exchange it for another?

It's not showing up on the diagnostic, haven't tried the CD version yet and probably not going to as I'm now hearing this really high pitched sound (kinda like a mosquito repellent) it started at around 5 PM and I could only really notice it when I leaned next to my tower but now it's very distinguishable (I'm 99% sure it's coming from the new HDD, just to double check I'll take it out tonight and see if the sound is still there tomorrow), I'm probably going to end up exchanging the drive using my warranty.
